Sony has confirmed it will not pursue an acquisition of Warner Bros, ending speculation about a potential deal. The company clarified that it is not seeking any “big Hollywood M&A deal” at this time. Instead, it plans to focus on its strongest divisions like anime and video games.
No Plans for a Major Hollywood Takeover

Warner Bros recently announced that it had “initiated a review of strategic alternatives to maximize shareholder value.” This statement led to rumors that Sony might be among the interested buyers. If the acquisition had happened, it would have given Sony control of hit franchises such as Mortal Kombat, Batman: Arkham, and Hogwarts Legacy.
However, Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki dismissed those reports in an interview. “Right now, we don’t want to do a big Hollywood M&A deal. We want to build a solid base in our strengths of anime and games,” he said. His comment reflects a more focused strategy aimed at reinforcing Sony’s creative industries rather than expanding through costly mergers.
Investing in Anime and Game Development

Totoki emphasized that Sony is prioritizing “growth markets” such as anime, which continues to expand worldwide. “The global market for anime is just dawning right now and will continue to grow by double digits for a while,” he explained.
Sony’s anime branch, Aniplex, has become one of the biggest players in the field. It produces hits like Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle and continues to invest heavily in the medium. The company has also secured stakes in Kadokawa and Bandai Namco, strengthening its influence in the anime ecosystem.
A Long-Term Focus on Creativity

Choosing not to acquire Warner Bros shows that Sony is thinking long-term. Instead of chasing large entertainment mergers, the company is building stability in sectors it already dominates.
Its PlayStation, Aniplex, and entertainment arms are now working more closely together, aligning Sony’s vision across games and animation. By focusing on creativity and sustainable growth, Sony aims to shape its future through innovation rather than acquisition.
