Dead by Daylight has never shied away from exploring horror across different cultures, but Sinister Grace marks something special. We had the opportunity to have an exclusive interview with Dave Richard, Senior Creative Director for Dead by Daylight, to discuss how the team brought one of Thailand’s most feared spirits into the game’s twisted universe.
Released recently, Sinister Grace introduces The Krasue, a terrifying killer drawn from Thai folklore, alongside survivor Vee Boonyasak, a Thai punk drummer. The chapter represents the game’s most visually disturbing content yet, featuring intense body horror that has left players both horrified and fascinated.
Choosing the Krasue
Among Thailand’s rich collection of supernatural beings, The Krasue stands out as particularly nightmarish. Richard explains what drew the team to this specific spirit: “There are so many interesting Thai ghosts, but indeed we landed very quickly on the Krasue because she is such a visually powerful killer. She also elicits very visceral reactions from those who encounter her.”
The decision went beyond visual impact. “It also didn’t hurt that she is so widely known and feared in Thailand and Southeast Asia,” Richard adds. This recognition factor played a key role in selecting The Krasue over other potential candidates.

Krasue-like spirits exist throughout Southeast Asia, with variations across multiple countries. So why specifically choose the Thai version? Richard’s answer centers on the community itself.
“We had to pick one and we landed on the Thai version of the Krasue because we knew we had amazing Thai and more widely Southeast Asian players who would love to see such an important element of their culture represented.”
The team saw this as an opportunity to bridge cultures through horror. “Horror has the power to bring people together and we are thrilled that we’ve been able to introduce The Krasue to many new eyes and have made Southeast Asian folklore accessible to a new audience,” Richard says.
Adapting Folklore to Gameplay
Translating The Krasue into Dead by Daylight presented unique challenges. The spirit appears as a floating head with trailing organs, a far cry from the game’s typical western horror villains. “She is 100% unique and so distinct from anything we have ever done,” Richard notes. “It was an incredible opportunity for us to sit down and think long and hard how to integrate her into Dead by Daylight so that we stay as true to its nature as possible while adapting it to the DbD universe.”

The killer features two distinct forms in the game. Players can switch between Body Form, where they traverse the map and curse survivors with a Leeching Gland, and Head Form, where they pursue victims with increased speed and attack using an Intestinal Whip. Dave Richard explains how the team grounded these abilities in the character’s backstory: “The screams the Krasue makes and the poisoning that she is able to inflict are based on Burong’s life before being cursed.”
Burong Sukapat was a celebrated opera performer before becoming The Krasue, a detail that influences both her visual design and gameplay mechanics.
Ensuring Cultural Accuracy
The team took cultural representation seriously throughout development. “It was incredibly important for us to honor Thai folklore with our interpretation of the Krasue, hence why we worked with a Thai consultant – to ensure that our work was and is as accurate as possible,” Richard explains.
This commitment extended to every aspect of the character. “It was also paramount for us to work with a Thai-based voice actor; we were so grateful to be able to work with Dr. Organ Prawang, who’s a Thai Opera singer,” he says. The choice of a Thai opera singer to voice Burong’s human form adds another layer of authenticity to the character.
The visual design stayed faithful to the folklore’s most recognizable element. “As far as the animations, we had to have the floating head with the organs trailing behind- this was of course, a must and I think the team really pulled it off,” Richard shares.

Beyond consultation, the development involved direct collaboration with Thai creators. Dave Richard lists the key contributors: “We were lucky to have Dr. Organ Prawang voicing the human form of the Krasue, Sura Siu, a Thai voice actor for Vee Boonyasak, as well as Songmuang Chuaynukoon, a Bangkok-based artist who designed the key art for the Chapter.”
These collaborations shaped the final product in meaningful ways. “Their insights were invaluable – it is so important for us, when representing other cultures, to do it right and with care – and these collaborators definitely ensured this for us,” Richard emphasizes.
Community Response
Since release, the response from Thai and Southeast Asian players has exceeded the team’s expectations. “The love we have received from the Thai and the Southeast Asian community has been overwhelming in the best of ways,” Dave Richard says.
“The feedback has blown our mind – thank you from the bottom of our hearts!”
The chapter also includes survivor Vee Boonyasak, whose story connects to The Krasue in a dark twist. Vee, a drummer from punk band Axekick, sampled recordings of Burong’s opera vocals into a track, unknowingly cursing himself and drawing him into The Fog.

The Sinister Grace Collection offers additional outfits that explore both characters before their encounter with The Fog, including Burong’s opera costumes and Vee’s punk rock wardrobe. Sinister Grace is now available in Dead by Daylight, offering players the chance to experience Thai folklore through one of the game’s most visually intense chapters to date.
