Square Enix has officially announced Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, a remake of the 2000 classic Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past. The game will release on February 5, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, Switch, and PC through Steam and Microsoft Store.
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined brings the original adventure into the modern era with a unique visual style. The character designs by famous manga artist Akira Toriyama have been turned into a 3D art style using real-world dolls. The game’s environments also feature a handmade, diorama-style look that makes the world feel like a living storybook.
The story stays true to the original but has been improved to flow better. Players will still follow the main adventure of unlocking different islands piece by piece, but the pacing has been made smoother. Side quests, extra stories, and mini-games are also included.
Updates
The turn-based combat has received major changes to make battles more exciting. Key updates include:
- A new “Moonlighting” feature that lets players use two job classes at once
- A “Let Loose” ability that activates when characters get worked up during battle
- A new “Monster Master” job class with a “Positive Reinforcement” skill that calls powerful monsters to fight enemies

Players will journey with characters like Keifer, the prince of Estard, and Maribel, the daughter of a mayor, along with other allies. The game involves collecting fragments to complete tablets, which unlock and expand different worlds to explore. Moreover, each world contains towns, dungeons, and quests. Quality-of-life improvements have been added throughout the game, including a redesigned user interface that makes information easier to access.
Collector’s Edition and Bonuses
A Physical Collector’s Edition is now available for pre-order exclusively through the Square Enix e-STORE. It includes the standard game, a SteelBook case, a Dragon Quest smile slime plush, a ship in a bottle figure, and several downloadable content packs plus a Ruff Costume.

A Digital Deluxe Edition offers 48 hours of early access, a unique Ruff costume, and three paid DLC packs. Early purchasers of any edition will receive an Early Bird Bonus with a Dragon Quest VIII Hero costume and three Seeds of Proficiency items. Digital buyers will also get a platform-specific Slime Shield.
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined aims to welcome both returning fans and newcomers to experience this classic RPG adventure with modern improvements when it launches next year.
