SEGA has launched the digital version of Sonic Frontiers on Nintendo Switch 2, called the Definitive Edition. The game is based on the 2022 original that has sold over 4.5 million copies worldwide across physical and digital formats. Those who prefer a physical copy will need to wait a bit longer, as the boxed version is set to release on September 17, 2026.
The Definitive Edition has been optimized for Nintendo Switch 2, bringing improved visuals and smoother gameplay to the platform. Players can choose between a Graphics Mode and a Performance Mode, letting them decide whether they want to prioritize visual quality or performance when playing.
This version comes packed with content right from the start. All three major free updates that were previously released for the game are included, along with free DLC that had only been available on other platforms before. Digital Deluxe bonuses are also bundled in, which include a Digital Art Book and a Mini Soundtrack. The updates bring new modes, costumes, and additional story content featuring playable characters Amy, Knuckles, and Tails.
For those unfamiliar with how Sonic Frontiers plays, the game uses an Open-Zone format where all the stages and gameplay elements connect within a single open world map. Players can explore multiple islands filled with Battles, Puzzles, side quests, Cyber Space levels, and other Challenges at their own pace, without being locked into following a set path.

To mark the Nintendo Switch 2 launch, SEGA has also revealed a new commemorative illustration celebrating the release. A launch trailer is available on YouTube for those who want to see the game in action before buying.
In line with the Definitive Edition launch, SEGA has also adjusted the pricing on the standard digital version and the Digital Deluxe Edition of the original Sonic Frontiers across all platforms, including PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC, with updated prices now in place across all storefronts.
