Rod Fergusson, the head of the Diablo series at Blizzard Entertainment, has announced his departure from the company after five years in the role. Fergusson shared the news on social media, saying he was stepping down from his position as senior vice president and Diablo general manager to look for new challenges.
Before joining Blizzard, Fergusson had a long career in the gaming industry. He started as a program manager at Microsoft, then moved to Epic Games where he worked on the Gears of War series. He also spent time at Irrational Games, 2K, and Black Tusk Studios before returning to Microsoft as studio head of The Coalition, where he worked on Gears of War again.
After five years of driving the Diablo franchise forward with four big launches, it’s time for me to step away from Blizzard/Microsoft, sword in hand, and see what’s next. The teams are set up for success, with an exciting slate of releases ahead. I’m incredibly proud of what… pic.twitter.com/Fsh4gjmgVl

In 2019, Fergusson left The Coalition to join Blizzard and take charge of the Diablo franchise. Following Microsoft’s purchase of Activision Blizzard, he found himself working under Microsoft for the third time in his career. In his LinkedIn post, Fergusson said he had two main goals when he joined Blizzard: to bring new life to the Diablo franchise and to make a meaningful impact on the company.
“The Diablo franchise, in its almost 30 years, has never been stronger and more relevant than it is right now,” Fergusson wrote. He credited the success to the hard work of the Diablo team over the past five years.

During his time at Blizzard, the company released several Diablo games, including Diablo II: Resurrected, Diablo Immortal for mobile devices, and Diablo IV with its first expansion, Vessel of Hatred. Diablo IV had a record-breaking launch. In a Q&A session we had the chance to interview Fergusson before his departure, where he discussed the success of the Vessel of Hatred expansion and the game’s evolution.
