Bandai Namco has unveiled Digimon Story: Time Stranger, the long-awaited mainline entry in the series. Developed by Media.Vision—the team behind Cyber Sleuth—this new title reimagines the classic formula with a fresh Unreal Engine 5 makeover, a fractured timeline mechanic, and over 450 Digimon to recruit.

Here is everything we know so far.

      Story

Set in a fractured, alternate version of Tokyo called Ilias, Time Stranger introduces a reality where different time periods have collapsed into one. After a mysterious Digivice incident, the player-created protagonist—a boy or girl of your choice—is pulled into this chaotic digital city outside of linear time.

In Ilias, past, present, and future collide unpredictably. As the protagonist adapts, they join the Chrono Linkers, a resistance group working to stabilize the timeline. This group doesn’t just respond to anomalies—they’re digging deeper to uncover a dangerous temporal virus and corrupted digital fragments.

Players must explore unstable zones, recover lost data, and solve the mystery of the fractured timeline. Along the way, familiar faces like Kyoko Kuremi and Takuto return—now older and changed by this new world. Their presence connects longtime fans with the franchise’s roots while enriching the narrative. With your chosen Digimon partner, you’ll restore order and face the force behind Ilias’ unraveling fate.

Bandai Namco recently released a story trailer that expands on the core premise. It introduces the Titans’ looming threat and Junomon’s warnings, placing the Iliad server at the center of conflict. Locations like Gear Forest and Central Town appear corrupted, reinforcing the timeline fracture theme that drives the narrative.

The trailer confirms that Inori and her partner Aegiomon are designated as Class A anomalies. Both face elimination under the Digital World’s natural laws, adding intense emotional weight to their journey. Their bond, however, is positioned as a driving force that may reshape fate itself.

Another major reveal centers on a mysterious gate, described as the key to restoring peace in Iliad. ClavisAngemon, protector of the Zenith Gate, is tied to this plotline, though its true purpose remains unknown. The trailer hints that this gate may connect worlds, times, or even higher dimensions.

The footage teases high-stakes encounters, such as Brachiomon’s fight featuring Pegasusmon and Friimon. Armor Digimon are confirmed to appear early in the game, giving players more strategic options. Fans will also recognize the return of Digimon like Sirenmon, Frigimon, and multiple Olympus 12 members.

      Difference from Previous Titles

Time Stranger expands the familiar formula in several meaningful ways. First, it trades the series’ confined dungeons for a semi-open world, filled with interconnected biomes that evolve based on timeline shifts. These areas change appearance, layout, and enemy encounters depending on the current timeline phase.

This change encourages players to revisit locations and observe new environmental clues. Instead of linear missions, story progression now reacts to the world. For instance, a calm area might suddenly become dangerous if time shifts unexpectedly.

Combat also evolves. While still turn-based, the game introduces terrain effects, timeline-altering battle phases, and a new Cross Arts mechanic—a deeper version of Cyber Sleuth’s Cross Combos. This system allows powerful combo attacks if players meet certain synergy conditions, adding strategy and variety.

Additionally, Time Stranger improves exploration and convenience. Digivolution can now be triggered directly from the pause menu, removing the need to return to the DigiLab. Combined with a better UI, customizable mounts, and live overworld interactions, the game feels more fluid and immersive.

These updates show that Time Stranger doesn’t abandon its roots—it enhances them with meaningful innovations.

      What’s New

Time Stranger introduces multiple fresh features to modernize and elevate the series. One standout is the timeline-shifting mechanic. Unlike older titles with static worlds, the environment now morphs depending on temporal phases. A peaceful street could become a prehistoric jungle or a devastated city, dramatically affecting both visuals and gameplay.

This dynamic design pushes players to adjust strategies based on the current timeline. Exploration becomes less about following a path and more about responding to changes in the world.

Combat is also more engaging. The turn-based system now includes terrain manipulation and time-sensitive enemy behavior. If a battle extends across a shift in time, enemies may gain new attacks or weaknesses, forcing quick thinking.

Cross Arts, a mechanic mentioned earlier, lets characters perform cinematic group attacks by syncing up moves and status conditions. This deepens synergy across your party and rewards careful planning.

World-building has also received attention. The semi-open world is segmented into biomes ruled by Olympos XII Digimon. These zones evolve over time and feature reactive NPC interactions. For instance, you might see Coronamon and Lunamon chatting near a fountain or encounter the 02 rookies on patrol.

Mountable Digimon are another exciting feature new to the series. Players can ride certain Digimon across different terrain types—such as flying over cliffs, swimming across rivers, or scaling steep mountains.

The latest DigiRide Trailer highlights Growlmon, a fierce dinosaur-like Digimon with fiery attacks for land travel; Halsemon, a hawk-like Digimon with sharp vision and agility for aerial exploration; and Whamon, a massive whale-like Digimon gliding through the seas for aquatic journeys. Many more rideable Digimon await discovery in the full game.

These mounts aren’t just cosmetic either; they play a crucial role in environmental traversal, often unlocking hidden routes, special zones, and rare Digimon encounters that would otherwise be unreachable. Personalized mount animations also help bring each Digimon’s personality to life during travel.

Lastly, convenience features have been overhauled. Players can now Digivolve directly from the menu, improving pacing. The new UI is intuitive, with streamlined inventory systems and clear stat tracking that reduces micromanagement.

Together, these features make Time Stranger the most interactive and fluid game in the Digimon Story series to date.

      Before Playing the Game

Producer Ryosuke Hara expressed genuine excitement about Time Stranger. For him and the development team, the game represents both a tribute to Digimon’s legacy and a fresh gateway for new fans.

Producer, Ryosuke Hara | Image Credit: Bandai Namco Entertainment

He sincerely hopes that long-time Digimon followers will find the new story, gameplay systems, and worldbuilding rewarding, while also inviting first-time players to use this title as their entry into the rich and diverse world of Digimon.

Hara emphasizes that Time Stranger isn’t just about battles and collecting creatures—it’s a story about forming deep bonds with your partner Digimon and exploring those relationships across different timelines and worlds. He encourages players to not only enjoy the strategy of turn-based combat and the thrill of raising over 450 Digimon, but also to take time to connect with their Digimon partners on a more emotional level.

Producer, Ryosuke Hara | Image Credit: Bandai Namco Entertainment

He also shared a personal tip and insight: there’s no single “right way” to play. Whether you want to focus your efforts on one favorite Digimon or experiment by raising a broad variety of companions, every approach is valid. The game’s evolution system, which allows for branching and reverse evolutions, was designed to support and reward the unique choices each player makes throughout their journey.

As for his own playstyle, Hara revealed that he personally chose Patamon as his partner and is planning to evolve it into Goddramon—showing his own excitement and connection to the Digimon he’s raising. He ended his message by saying how much he looks forward to seeing the bonds players form and the Digimon they choose to bring into battle.

According to him, Time Stranger is more than just a game—it’s an invitation to adventure, growth, and friendship that crosses the boundaries of time, space, and worlds.

Going a step further, the Digital Ultimate Edition (RM 459) builds upon the Deluxe package by offering even more exclusive in-game content. This includes early unlocks for special Agumon and Gabumon, a Costume Pack with three alternate outfits per character and side missions, the Public Safety Suit & Special Supply Set, and a unique Farm Item: Chic Toilet. Rounding out this bundle is the Cyber Sleuth BGM Pack, allowing fans to relive nostalgic tracks from previous entries.

It’s worth noting that while a Collector’s Edition featuring a 15 cm Jupitermon figurine, Digimon Card Game promo set, hardcover artbook, and full digital content is available in select regions, it is not included in the Southeast Asia release. Fans in SEA will need to look to international storefronts if they wish to import this version.

Whether you’re a veteran Tamer or someone curious about the franchise, this title offers an exciting entry point. With its rich cast, expansive mechanics, and fresh take on time-driven storytelling, Time Stranger is poised to be the most ambitious Digimon game yet.

Digimon Story: Time Stranger is now available for pre-order on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X | S and PC via Steam. Players can also pre-order physical editions through major retailers.
