Fans hoping for updated versions of the classic Sonic Adventure games might have to wait a while longer. Takashi Iizuka, the head of Sonic Team who directed both original games, recently explained why remakes aren’t in the works.
In an interview with Shack News, Iizuka shared his thoughts on bringing back the beloved 3D Sonic games. The original Sonic Adventure came out in 1998, followed by its sequel in 2001. Both games were huge hits on the Dreamcast console and were the first Sonic games to include open-world style gameplay.

When asked about possible remakes or remasters, Iizuka said he’d rather spend that time and effort making completely new Sonic games instead.
“I am really appreciative of everyone who likes the Sonic Adventure series, but when I think about what it would take to bring that game up to the standards and expectations of what the modern gaming audience would want, I think it would be about as much time and energy as it would to make a new title,” Iizuka explained.

He added that this thinking is why there are currently no plans to remake the Adventure series. The Sonic Adventure games remain popular with fans more than 20 years after their release. They marked an important step for the series as Sonic made the jump to 3D gaming on Sega’s Dreamcast system.
