Hideo Kojima has officially confirmed that an anime adaptation of Death Stranding is currently in development.

In a recent interview with Vogue Japan, Kojima shared his broader vision for the Death Stranding franchise and discussed his belief that the line between video games and films will increasingly blur in the future.

While speaking about the live-action Death Stranding movie, Kojima explained that his goal is to create a version of the story that leverages the unique strengths of cinema – one compelling enough to potentially earn prestigious film awards. He briefly added that, in addition to the film, an anime adaptation is also underway as a separate project.

Kojima revealed that he is currently working with A24 on the live-action adaptation of Death Stranding. He noted that when it comes to translating games into visual media, some adaptationsr emain closely aligned with the original narrative, while others serve more as fan-oriented tributes.

Acknowledging the merits of both styles, Kojima expressed his personal desire to explore the storytelling potential unique to cinema. His goal is to create a film version of Death Stranding that could only be realized through the medium of film – one that aspires to be recognized at prestigious festivals such as Cannes or Venice. He also confirmed that an anime adaptation is in development alongside the film.

Although Kojima previously mentioned the idea of a Death Stranding anime during a 2024 interview with Variety, this marks the first official confirmation that the project is actively in production.

In the September 2024 interview, Kojima stated that in order to expand the Death Stranding intellectual property, a sequel game is currently in development.

He added that the next step involves branching into other forms of media – including film, anime, and television dramas – as part of the franchise’s second phase, which focuses on growing the IP across multiple platforms.
