Heroes of Newerth (HoN), the once-prominent multiplayer online battle arena  (MOBA) that ceased operations in 2022, has sparked speculation about a potential comeback after its official X account posted a cryptic image of a fiery egg. The post, which has garnered over 100,000 impressions, appears to hint at the game rising from the ashes like a phoenix.

Adding to the intrigue, the game’s social media account has updated its profile picture to feature an all-black Heroes of Newerth logo, fueling community speculation about a possible revival. These subtle changes mark the first signs of activity from the official HoN accounts since the game’s shutdown in 2022.

Originally developed by S2 Games, Heroes of Newerth emerged as one of the three major MOBAs in the early 2010s, alongside Dota 2 and League of Legends. The game drew inspiration from the original Defence of the Ancients (DotA) mod for Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne and quickly found success among MOBA enthusiasts.

However, despite its strong start, HoN struggled to maintain its position against its competitors. The game’s declining popularity eventually led to the closure of its official servers in June 2022, though player-maintained community servers have remained active since then.

While no official announcement has been made regarding the game’s return, the unexpected social media activity has reinvigorated the HoN community. For many players, this mysterious tease represents hope for fresh competition in the MOBA genre, which has long been dominated by Dota 2 and League of Legends.
