Steam Game Recording Exits Beta, Launches for All Users

Valve has officially launched Steam Game Recording, moving the feature out of beta and making it available to all Steam users. The new toolset enhances Steam’s functionality by offering robust gameplay recording and editing capabilities.

A standout feature is the marker system, which allows players to flag important moments during gameplay for easy reference later. The system will also support developer-implemented markers that automatically tag significant in-game achievements or milestones, similar to how console platforms capture trophy moments.

Users can choose between two recording modes: background recording, which captures footage up to a user-defined duration or storage limit, and on-demand recording for manual control. The Steam overlay provides quick access to replay functionality, while the editing suite allows for clipping and cropping. Finished recordings can be shared directly with other Steam users or exported as MP4 files.

The recording feature works universally across Steam’s platform, including compatibility with the Steam Deck and even non-Steam games. Notably, the capture system is designed to record only the game window, ensuring desktop privacy during recording sessions.

Steam Game Recording integrates these features directly into the platform’s existing overlay system, eliminating the need for separate recording software. This streamlined approach positions Steam as an increasingly comprehensive gaming platform that continues to expand its utility for PC gamers.

The feature is now live and available to all Steam users as part of the platform’s standard functionality.
