If you’ve found yourself humming tunes from “Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World,” “Full Dive,” “Overlord,” or “Uncle from Another World,” chances are you’re already a fan of Mayu Maeshima’s work. We recently sat down with the sensational Mayu Maeshima during LEVEL UP PLAY 2024, and we’re still buzzing from the experience. Known for her electrifying performances and powerhouse vocals, Mayu gave us a glimpse into her world of anime music stardom.

Expressing her enthusiasm, Maeshima noted, “This is my first time in Malaysia—not just for a performance, but also for trips or holidays. I’ve really enjoyed my experience so far. Walking around, I’ve been so impressed by how vibrant and colorful the town is, with so many things to see.”

When asked about exploring new musical genres, Maeshima expressed interest in challenging herself with more music with influences from her home country and foreign countries.She explained, “I really enjoy that kind of phrasing and musicality. So if I ever get the chance to explore and challenge myself, it’s definitely something I’d look forward to.”

Maeshima also discussed her approach to songwriting, particularly in relation to her solo debut single “YELLOW,” which was entirely in English. She elaborated, “When writing music, I wanted to express my feelings without diluting their meaning. I struggled with whether to use Japanese or English for this. English gave me the ability to express my emotions in a more direct manner, allowing me to express myself without compromising the freshness/immediacy of my feelings”

Regarding her future plans, Maeshima emphasized, “In the future, I definitely want to continue working in genres that are central to my career, especially anime songs. I’d love to keep providing music in that space for everyone.” She added, “Being invited to Malaysia this time has really made me realize how amazing it would be to perform for fans in many different countries.”

Maeshima also shared her love for anime, mentioning series like “The Prince of Tennis,” “Attack on Titan,” and “Vinland Saga” as personal favorites. She described her unique connection to the anime she’s worked on, saying, “For the anime where I had the chance to sing the theme song, I end up viewing the characters almost like family or as if I’m their parent.”

During her stay, Maeshima had the opportunity to try local Malaysian cuisine. She particularly enjoyed a noodle dish, commenting, “I’m really hoping we can find a way to introduce Loh Shu Fun to Japan because I can see how its various flavors would complement each other well. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed it.”

Reflecting on her performance experience, Maeshima admitted, “Before going on stage to perform, I feel a mix of excitement and nervousness. Since this is my first live performance in a new country, I’m thrilled about the opportunity to sing in front of a crowd here, but I’m also anxious about how the fans will react and how the performance will turn out.”

In a message to her fans, Maeshima expressed, “To everyone in Malaysia who listens to my music across the sea, I am so incredibly happy. It brings me great joy to know that my songs are being heard not just in Japan but in another country as well.” She concluded with a promise: “Not just this time, but I definitely want to return to Malaysia for another performance in the future. I would be thrilled if you could come and join me then.”
