[TGS24] EXCLUSIVE: Hiroshi Kataoka & Akiko Matsunami Reveal the Magic Behind Fairy Tail 2

We had the opportunity to have an exclusive interview with Hiroshi Kataoka, the producer, and Akiko Matsunami, a senior expert, behind the highly anticipated Fairy Tail 2. Their insights offer an exciting glimpse into the development process, new features, and what fans can expect from this magical sequel.

Evolving the Fairy Tail Experience

Fairy Tail 2 aims to significantly evolve beyond its predecessor, with the development team tackling several challenges head-on. Kataoka revealed that one of their primary goals was to revamp the skill mechanics, providing players with a fresh and engaging experience. In a bold move, the team decided to shift from the turn-based combat of the first game to a real-time system, adding a new layer of excitement to battles.

The game will cover the Alvarez Empire arc, which presents the final storyline of the original series. Integrating this epic conclusion into the gameplay was a key focus for the developers, ensuring that players can fully immerse themselves in the climactic events of the Fairy Tail saga.

“One of the primary goals for Fairy Tail 2 was to significantly evolve beyond its predecessor, especially in terms of skill mechanics,” Kataoka explained. “Another key consideration was the combat system—whether to stick with a turn-based model or shift to real-time. In the end, we chose to go with a real-time combat system.”

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

A standout feature of Fairy Tail 2 is its emphasis on teamwork dynamics during combat. Matsunami explained that the new system encourages players to develop cooperative strategies between characters, mirroring the camaraderie seen in the anime and manga. This aspect was carefully crafted under the watchful eye of Hiro Mashima, the creator of Fairy Tail, to ensure it captures the essence of the original series.

Kataoka emphasized, “We focused on how to integrate the storyline into the gameplay, especially the teamwork dynamics during battles. The combat system emphasizes cooperative strategies between characters, and these elements were all closely supervised and approved by Hiro Mashima, the creator of Fairy Tail, to ensure they stayed true to the source material.”

The game also introduces a new layer of strategy, allowing players to choose which characters face off against members of the formidable Spriggan 12. Matsunami added, “Another important aspect this time around was giving players the freedom to develop their own characters and decide how they would face off against the members of the Spriggan 12. The ability for players to choose who fights whom was a new layer of strategy that we wanted to incorporate into the game.”

Familiar Faces, Fresh Looks

While Fairy Tail 2 won’t introduce brand-new characters, fans can look forward to seeing familiar faces from the previous game, including both allies and enemies. Kataoka hinted at exciting updates for key characters like Natsu, promising to bring something new to these beloved personalities.

“Most of the characters, whether they were allies or enemies in the previous game, will make an appearance in Fairy Tail 2,” Kataoka stated. “While we won’t be adding new characters, players can look forward to fresh outfits for the existing ones, which will provide a sense of novelty.”

Matsunami added, “Although we aren’t introducing new characters, we’ve added new elements to key characters like Natsu. Players can expect exciting updates that will bring something new to familiar faces, so there’s definitely something to look forward to.”

Collaborations and Crossovers

Continuing the tradition from the previous game, Fairy Tail 2 will feature costume collaborations with other Koei Tecmo titles. The main collaboration partner this time is the Atelier series, with Lucy already sporting an Atelier Ryza 1 costume in promotional materials.  Kataoka explained, “This time, our main focus for collaborations will be costumes, with Atelier as the central collaboration partner. As you mentioned, we’ve continued the collaboration with Atelier Ryza 1 & 2. Additionally, we’re introducing a new skill for Lucy.”

Matsunami added that the collaboration goes beyond mere cosmetics: “Since Fairy Tail is developed under GUST, it makes sense for us to integrate elements from Atelier. Expect to see features like alchemy in the game. We hope fans look forward to it.”

Post-Launch Plans and Future Prospects

The development team has exciting post-launch plans for Fairy Tail 2. Kataoka confirmed, “We are indeed planning to add new storylines and costumes through post-launch content. We’re also currently considering introducing new characters, so please stay tuned for updates.”

Looking further ahead, the team is open to exploring the “100-Year Quest” arc, which is currently airing as an anime. However, Kataoka emphasized, “At the moment, we’re fully focused on the development of Fairy Tail 2, so we haven’t made any concrete plans for what comes next. However, it’s possible that we may continue along the lines of the anime’s progression, including the ‘100-Year Quest’ arc.”

Magical Challenges in Development

Bringing the spectacular magic of Fairy Tail to life in a video game presented unique challenges. Kataoka admitted, “There were moments where we felt that the game’s representation of some skills didn’t fully capture the grandeur of the original. In such cases, we developed alternative skills to compensate and maintain the overall impact of their abilities in gameplay.”

Matsunami highlighted a particularly impressive feature: “One area where we really focused our attention was the interaction between character costumes and their magic. For instance, in our trailers, you might notice that when a character casts a spell, their outfit changes. This was one of the more challenging aspects of development, but we felt it was important to include, as it adds depth and excitement to the game.”

A Message to Asian Fans

The developers have prepared special content for their Asian playerbase, including exclusive features and a boxed edition with unique content. Kataoka expressed, “For this release, we’ve prepared some special content specifically for our Asian players, including exclusive features tailored to the region. Asian users will also be able to purchase the boxed edition, which includes content that reflects the emotional connection we have with our Asian audience.”

Matsunami concluded with an invitation to fans: “Since Fairy Tail is currently airing its anime and continues to be a highly popular and action-packed series, we encourage everyone to not only enjoy the anime but also give our game a try.
