[TGS24] SWORD ART ONLINE FRACTURED DAYDREAM Hands-On: Diving into the Virtual World

At Tokyo Game Show 2024, we had the opportunity to plunge headfirst into SWORD ART ONLINE FRACTURED DAYDREAM, set for release later this year. The hands-on demo offered two distinct experiences: a co-op mode and an engaging mini-game, both showcasing the game’s diverse gameplay elements.

The co-op experience, a cornerstone of the exhibition, allowed up to 20 players to band together against formidable foes. With all 21 playable characters from the main game at our disposal, we opted for Alice Zuberg, a tank character. Alice’s straightforward combat style revolves around sword techniques, with her Enhance Armament skill boosting damage output. The game features six distinct positions: fighter, tank, rogue, ranger, mage, and support, catering to various playstyles.

Upon entering the 20-player arena, we faced off against Dorz’l the chaos drake. Starting at level 1, players must gradually unlock skills while dodging enemy attacks and dealing damage. The battle’s dynamics shift as the boss’s health decreases, introducing smaller monsters that players must contend with before the main boss returns. The multiplayer mode incorporates several mechanics, including switch and chain finish abilities, which can inflict massive damage when executed properly. A revival system adds a layer of strategy, allowing teammates to rescue fallen comrades within a time limit.

The mini-game, reminiscent of Vampire Survivor, offers a different flavor of excitement. Players navigate a compact map, collecting and upgrading weapons to fend off hordes of monsters for five minutes. Elite monsters occasionally appear, dropping upgrade boxes upon defeat. The game’s intensity ramps up at the three-minute mark, testing players’ reflexes and decision-making skills.

Remarkably, despite the 20-player co-op mode, we experienced no noticeable lag. In addition, each player’s role on the battlefield felt distinct and purposeful, contributing to a cohesive team experience. The mini-game proved to be an addictive diversion, providing a perfect balance of challenge and fun.

Moreover, SWORD ART ONLINE FRACTURED DAYDREAM is slated for release on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, promising to deliver a rich, multi-faceted gaming experience for fans of the franchise and newcomers alike.
