Mummies Review – Mummy Music? Time to Wrap

Mummies is a 2023 animated film following the journey of three mummies and their pet to present day London in search of the stolen ring belonging to the royal family.

The movie was released in Malaysia on January 19^th, 2023 and is set to premiere in Spain and US on February 24^th, 2023.

The Tales of Mummies

Mummies starts of in modern day Egypt where a 3, 000 years old mummy city lies within the Earth. The story revolves around two betrothed, Princess Nefer and Thut and while the marriage was happily accepted by the folks, it was the opposite for the two of them. Nefer wants to be free from her royal constraints and Thut hates nothing more than commitment.

Before the wedding, The Pharaoh has entrusted to Thut the wedding ring so that he may keep in safe until the day of the wedding itself. However, as luck has it, an archaeologist by the name Lord Silvester Carnaby stumbled upon it during one of his expeditions.

With fame in mind, Carnaby brings the ring back to London and on tow were Thut, his younger brother Sekhem, Croc, a pet crocodile and Princess Nefer herself with the sole objective of reclaiming the ring back.

Mummies’ Chaos

Simply put, Mummies’ story is a jumbled mess. Nothing seems to make sense and what are scenes even? Throughout the movie, I could barely keep up with what is going on in one scene and then I’m suddenly thrown into another scene that barely has a connection to the previous ones.

Kids might enjoy the randomness of the movie with all its flashy colors but for those that are trying to understand the movie? You might as well just turn off your brain and enjoy the mumbo jumbo of Mummies.

Despite of the hurricane of chaos the plot is, the film did have a message that they were trying to convey. The old classic of facing your fears and realize your dreams. As cliché as it is, it was this message that was holding the plot together from letting it fall through.

Story aside, Mummies had a lot of gag moments across the movies but sadly they just kept on using so many mummy and ancient Egyptian stereotypes that it feels overused. It was funny and I had a good chuckle at first but then it got old way too fast.

Wrapping Time

You’re probably wondering why the title mentioned music. Well, our royal princess Nefer did not just wanted to be free from her family because it was suffocating. She wanted to be a singer and boy did the movie have quite a number of music being played.

The songs aren’t that too memorable but it was catchy enough that I bopped to the beat a couple of times in the theatre. I was really impressed with Nefer’s singing and was really happy that she got to achieve her dream at the end of it all.

Can the Mummies Act

Joe Thomas and Eleanor Tomlinson are the voices for the main characters, Thut and Princess Nefer. The duo plays out the part of an odd-couple pretty well and I really enjoyed their chemistry. Individually however, only Princess Nefer was shining while Thut is just flat out boring.

He just does not sound passionate enough with his solo lines. Maybe he was trying to go with a dead-like feel since he is a mummy but that does not really seem reasonable when Nefer was just so vibrant. Some of his joke fell flat from his delivery to a point that I could only muster a pity laugh out of me.

The villain though was a different case. Hugh Bonneville playing as the archaeologist Lord Carnaby was a blessing. He’s just plain evil and he nails it right down to a T. As comical of a villain he may be, I cannot help but just cheer in glee whenever he shows up.

The models for Mummies are pleasant to look at for what it’s worth. Some might say the animations look a bit janky or awkward that is what cartoon is. Wonky and over the top animations. The only thing that pulled me away from saying it was above decent was that they tried to go for the stop motion style on certain parts on the movie and it is was certainly a stop motion.

Thoughts of the Mummies

After all that has been said, Mummies is a decent movie at best. The plot was a mess and piecing it together felt like trying to solve a puzzle while a desert hurricane was throwing wrenches at you. However, if you put all that aside and watch it for entertainment it is enjoyable to a degree.

The villain was just superb and every scene with him on it never fails to put a smile to my face. He sounds like he loves his role so much and I am all for it.

All in all, if you ever feel like going out together with your loved ones or just by yourselves, then Mummies is a good pick to pass time with some decent entertainment.
