Over at Tokyo Game Show 2022, we got to try our hands on the demo preview for the upcoming remaster version of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion, and here’s our thoughts on it.

For those who are unfamiliar with the title, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion is a prequel to the original PlayStation 1 Final Fantasy VII game. The story of the game centers around the main character Zack Fair who goes on to play an important part in the backstory of Final Fantasy VII protagonist – Cloud Strife.

And to those who are wondering, this title will be a remaster of the original game instead of a remake, so the story settings of the game will faithfully remain the same as the original. Although, there will be some gameplay changes in terms of being updated so that it can be aligned with the gameplay that we’ve seen and experience with the Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

Gameplay

Similar to the original game, the slot machine feature will be making its return to the remaster. And since we don’t actual gain experience points from our battles with the enemy, leveling up for both your characters as well as  materials, you’re going to need some RNG luck from the slot machine to get that sweet 777 match in order to level up. And with the nature of it being a slot machine, the thing you get from it will be random, so in certain scenarios you might get to level up your characters while in certain situations it might just be random equipped material.

Going more in depth with the slot machine, once the character image matches, you’ll be able to execute the limit break ability depending on the character’s image was shown on the slot machine. So unlike the original, we’ll be able to execute the limit break of our characters at our own free will.

Character Voice Overs

Back in the original game, some of the lines in the game were not voiced, which can break immersion from time to time but this time around in the remaster, the whole game will be fully voiced over. The Japanese dub for the game will bring back the same Voice Actor cast as last time, so expect some similar voices when you re-experience the game.

Meanwhile the English dub will have a different cast due to the remake having new voice actors, and so because of this, they had to revoice some of the older lines as well.

We enjoyed our time trying out the preview of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion and we’re definitely looking forward to when the game releases on 13th December 2022 for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X & S, Xbox One and PC via Steam.
