The new Pokemon Direct has given us more information regarding the upcoming games Pokemon Scarlet and Violet which are now confirmed to be open world. A number of new pokemon, characters, and features have been revealed.

Within the Paldea Region, the legendary box Pokemon Koraidon and Miraidon will serve as motorcycles, jet skis, and hang gliders that will take you across the region.

It has also been revealed the open world of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet is able to be explored in four-person co-op play with each person being able to ride on their legendary.

The Treasure Hunt

In this game, the player will be enrolling in even Naranja (Scarlet) or Uva (Violet) Academy as a student. Here you are tasked with an independent study project called ‘The Treasure Hunt. The mission is to simply find a treasure.

There are three grand stories in the game where you can attend to find ‘treasure. One of these stories is the Gym Battle challenges. Unlike previous games, however, you can challenge the gyms in any order you want.

They didn’t say what the other two stories are however you can start either one from the very beginning of the game.

New characters 

The overview also introduced us to a number of new characters. In addition to the previously revealed Professor Sada and Turo, there will also be the academia director Clavell and homeroom teacher Jacq.

In terms of students, you’ll meet Namona who loves to battle, Arven who likes to cook, and Penny a shy student in your grade.

We’ve also been introduced to the ice-type gym leader Grusha.

New Pokemon

For new pokemon, they introduced a new regional form with Paldean Wooper who seems to be based on a mudskipper.

There’s also a new good boy dog pokemon called Fidough, who as the name implies is incredibly squishy.

Finally, there’s a walking narwal-like monster called Cetitan who has a large horn.

The Terastal Phenminon

The overview ended by introducing the new evolution gimmick of the generation called the terastal phenomenon which makes pokemon shine like gems and gives them cute little headwear like a bouquet for grass types and a candle for fire types.

This boosts the become’s type and makes their moves stronger. Some pokemon can also change their type when they terastalize which is based on their ‘tera type’. Most pokemon’s tera type will be the same as their regular type however certain members of a species could have different tera types.

While evolution gimmicks tend not the used in competitive play, being able to change types could be pretty interesting for those that play Pokemon more seriously.

Like with Dynamaxing in gen 8, there will also be raid battles with the Teralistlized pokemon.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet will be available for Nintendo Switch on the 18th of November 2022.
