343 Industries has come under fire after they tried to celebrate Juneteenth with the Halo Infinite Community, which unfortunately involved a racist name for their festive nameplate.

Juneteenth is an American holiday celebrating the emancipation of slaves- ostensibly a big celebration, especially for the Black community.

343 sought to celebrate Juneteenth in Halo Infinite with a special nameplate, adorned with the colors of the Pan-African Flag- but unfortunately decided that the name of their nameplate that bears explicit association with the Black community should be called “Bonobo”, a type of ape.

The developers have since taken to Twitter to apologize for the error– they insist that it’s not that anyone thought they’d just grab the first African-sounding word to associate it with the plate, but rather it was a system error.

“While the original name refers to an internal toolset, it was not intended to be applied to this content and we recognize the harm it may have caused”, says Senior Community Manager John Junyszek.

As of the fix, the palette has now been renamed to Freedom- a much more appropriate name given the context.

Meanwhile, fans on the game’s subreddit have taken to using the opportunity to make fun of how quickly 343 (rightfully so) aimed to fix their error, versus fixing any of the other complaints against Halo Infinite.

“Changed already. Who would’ve thought 343 could fix something so quick”, writes redditor APEX_ethab.

“Lmao the fact that they fixed this so quickly shows that they have full capability to fix at least SOMETHING in a reasonable amount of time. No excuses”, writes ecto_BRUH.
