Malaysian Horror Game ‘Paper Ghost Stories: Third Eye Open’ Announced

Publisher Chorus Worldwide and developer Cellar Vault Games have announced Paper Ghost Stories: Third Eye Open, the next installment in an anthology of horror games inspired by Malaysian myths and culture.

It will launch on consoles and PC via Steam in early 2023.

According to the Steam page: Paper Ghost Stories: Third Eye Open is a “third-person narrative adventure” featured in a “paper theater” aesthetic. Set in the early 2000s Malaysia, we will play as Ting, a 5-year-old Malaysian and gradually learn how his supernatural abilities differentiate him from others while being “guided and misled” by two spirits, respectively, each with their own agenda.

In the game, players will explore worlds generated through hand-drawing, solve puzzles, play minigames, and unravel the mysteries behind the storyline.

From activities and locations to characters and dialogues, Third Eye Open is full of Malaysian traditions, culture, and folklore. We will visit the morning market, make friends with old monks, eat Apam Balik cakes and various Nyonya cakes from the night market, dodge the spirits sitting in the forest, and more.

“When we saw 7PM from Cellar Vault Games, we knew we had played something special. Paper Ghost Stories: Third Eye Open takes many of the concepts that already existed in 7PM and develops those concepts. We can’t wait to bring a mix of Malaysian culture, ‘coming-of-age’ dramas, and horror stories to all fans. ” said Chorus Worldwide founder and CEO Shintaro Kanaoya in a press release.

Originally launched on September 2, 2020, the first entry of Paper Ghost Stories: 7PM can be downloaded now on PC via Steam for free.

The game will launch on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC via Steam in early 2023.
