Disney Plus will offer a cheaper subscription price but you’ll have to watch ads

Disney Plus has announced that the service will be getting a cheaper subscription price however there’s a catch, you will have to watch ads during the streams.

The new ad-supported subscription service would be offered to potential customers in late 2022 for US users while the international audiences will have to wait until 2023.

Disney’s Media and Entertainment Distribution chairman Kareem Daniel said that the cheaper subscription model with ads would provide more options for consumers to enjoy Disney Plus.

“Expanding access to Disney+ to a broader audience at a lower price point is a win for everyone – consumers, advertisers, and our storytellers,” Daniel said. “More consumers will be able to access our amazing content. Advertisers will be able to reach a wider audience, and our storytellers will be able to share their incredible work with more fans and families.”

Rita Ferro, the President of Advertising, Disney Media, and Entertainment Distribution further commented on why Disney decided to implement the new subscription model into their streaming service.

“Since its launch, advertisers have been clamoring for the opportunity to be part of Disney Plus and not just because there’s a growing demand for more streaming inventory,” Ferro explained.

“Disney Plus with advertising will offer marketers the most premium environment in streaming with our most beloved brands, Disney, Pixar, Star Wars, Marvel, and National Geographic. I can’t wait to share more with advertisers at the Upfront [event in May 2022].”

Disney Plus’ standard subscription model currently costs $7.99 per month in the US and RM29.49 in Malaysia. It has not been announced what the price of the ad-supported subscription model will be however Techradar predicts that will likely be $4.99 US per month, which could roughly translate to around RM20 per month in Malaysia.
