Jujutsu Kaisen 0, the prequel film to the Jujutsu Kaisen anime, has been a smashing success in the Japanese box office. According to a new tweet from the Jujutsu Kaisen anime Twitter account, the film was able to gross 5.8 billion yen, or just over 50 million USD since its opening on December 24, 2021.
The film was able to sell 4.3 million tickets in just 11 days. Considering that the population of Japan numbers at 125.5 million, it’s safe to estimate that over 3% of Japanese citizens have watched it. In its opening weekend alone, the film was able to achieve 2.69 billion yen, or just over 23 million USD, second only to Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train‘s opening of 4.6 billion yen, (44 million USD as per the exchange rate at the time).
While Mugen Train has beaten Jujutsu Kaisen 0 in terms of sales so far, the Jujutsu Kaisen manga was the best-selling manga of 2021, ahead of Demon Slayer at second place. Both series have been shattering records left, right and centre.
Jujutsu Kaisen 0 tells the story of Yuta Okkotsu and the events that take place in his first year at Tokyo Jujutsu High. Characters like Maki Zenin, Toge Inumaki and Panda are first-year students in the film as it takes place before season 1 of the Jujutsu Kaisen anime.
