Todd Howard of Bethesda Game Studios has shared fresh insights into the development of The Elder Scrolls 6, assuring fans that the game will return to the “classic style” they know and love. Following the mixed reception of titles such as Fallout 76 and Starfield, Howard confirmed that the next Elder Scrolls will focus on exploration and storytelling reminiscent of Skyrim, Oblivion, and Fallout 3.
Returning to Bethesda’s Roots

Speaking on the Kinda Funny Gamescast, Howard emphasised that the team is revisiting the design elements that defined Bethesda’s earlier RPGs. “We have a style that we know well and that our fans enjoy,” he explained. “Fallout 76 and Starfield were creative detours. With The Elder Scrolls 6, we are returning to the classic Elder Scrolls experience.”
Howard also noted that most of the developers who worked on Skyrim remain at Bethesda. This continuity should help retain the franchise’s familiar feel while allowing fresh team members to bring new ideas. “We know this style really well, and we’re excited to build upon it,” he added.
New Engine and Development Progress

The Elder Scrolls 6 will utilise Creation Engine 3, the latest iteration of Bethesda’s in-house engine. Howard explained that the studio has devoted significant time to improving the technology beyond Creation Engine 2, which powered Starfield. He confirmed the team is approaching a major internal milestone, with most of Bethesda’s studio and several external partners fully engaged on the project. Nevertheless, he cautioned that the game is still some way from release.
Early Announcement and Fan Anticipation

The game was first unveiled at E3 2018 with a cinematic trailer, providing few concrete details. The early announcement led to a long wait, compounded by Bethesda releasing Fallout 76 and Starfield in the intervening years. Rumours and leaks have circulated, including a 2024 Pinterest mood board from a developer suggesting possible settings. Howard urged fans to treat such information cautiously until Bethesda is ready to share verified details.
Looking Ahead

Although precise details remain scarce, Howard’s remarks suggest that The Elder Scrolls 6 aims to combine familiar RPG mechanics with new ideas and technical improvements. Fans of Skyrim and other classic Bethesda titles can take comfort in the knowledge that the core team is still at work, committed to crafting a world worth exploring.
As development continues, players can expect updates on engine advancements and gameplay direction, although no release date has been confirmed. Bethesda is prioritising quality, aiming to deliver a rich, classic Elder Scrolls experience when the game finally launches.
