SEGA has officially canceled its Super Game project, the company confirmed quietly in its latest financial results presentation. The news was included in a slide reviewing the company’s live service game efforts, with little fanfare despite the project being one of SEGA’s most ambitious undertakings in recent memory.
First announced in May 2021, Super Game was described as a collection of multiple triple-A titles that would bring together SEGA’s wide range of technologies and “go beyond the traditional framework of games.” The company even considered investing up to 100 billion yen (around $882 million at the time) over five years to make it happen.

In late 2023, SEGA’s co-chief operating officer Shuji Utsumi spoke about the vision behind the project. “A ‘Super Game’ involves the concept of a game that stands head and shoulders above normal games,” he said, adding that it would build an entire world involving not just players, but also streamers and their audiences.
SEGA pointed to the weak performance of Sonic Rumble Party and its disappointing 2023 purchase of Angry Birds creator Rovio, which has seen a major drop in sales, as key reasons for pulling back from free-to-play games. As a result, the company says it is lowering the priority of free-to-play titles for now.

Despite the shift, several classic franchise revivals are still moving forward. SEGA confirmed that games based on Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Golden Axe, and Streets of Rage are still in development. SEGA’s decision comes at a time when the live service game market has been struggling across the industry. Most players have stuck with established titles like Fortnite and Roblox, while newer games have had a hard time breaking through. Development costs have also continued to rise, making it even harder for new live service games to succeed.
