Capcom shared new details about Resident Evil Requiem after its appearance at The Game Awards 2025. During the show, the company officially revealed Leon S. Kennedy as the game’s second playable protagonist, joining newcomer Grace.
Shortly after the announcement, director Akifumi Nakanishi and producer Masato Kumazawa discussed how the dual-protagonist structure works and why Leon plays such an important role.
Two Protagonists, One Shared Story
Nakanishi explained that Resident Evil Requiem follows one continuous story that shifts between Leon and Grace as events unfold. Although both characters exist in the same timeline, they approach danger very differently. Grace acts as a fearful and inexperienced survivor, while Leon brings the confidence of a seasoned veteran.

At key moments, their paths cross, allowing players to see how their personalities clash and complement each other. Kumazawa also reassured newcomers that prior series knowledge is unnecessary. Players only need to know that Leon survived the Raccoon City incident. From there, the story focuses on how an older Leon responds to new threats and responsibilities.
Horror and Action, Intentionally Balanced
The game splits playable time almost evenly between both characters. Grace’s sections focus on tension and vulnerability, taking inspiration from Resident Evil 2. Meanwhile, Leon’s chapters emphasize fast-paced combat inspired by Resident Evil 4. Nakanishi stated that Leon does not fit traditional survival horror, so his segments highlight intense action instead.

The developers designed the pacing to constantly shift tension. Horror-heavy moments give way to action, then return again. Nakanishi compared this rhythm to “jumping into a cold bath after a hot sauna,” creating contrast that keeps players engaged without exhausting them.
Designing an Older Leon For Resident Evil Requiem
When shaping Leon’s appearance, the team aimed to portray him as an “ikeoji,” meaning a cool and attractive older man. This game marks Leon’s first return to Raccoon City since Resident Evil 2, which adds emotional weight to his reactions. His gameplay reflects his experience through new melee moves, martial arts techniques, and expanded combat options.

Capcom also confirmed a collaboration with Porsche, giving Leon a custom Cayenne Turbo GT designed specifically for the game’s world. Resident Evil Requiem launches on February 27, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.
