One of the internet’s largest video game preservation projects is coming to an end. Myrient, a nonprofit online archive hosting more than 390 terabytes of video game data, has confirmed it will shut down on March 31, 2026. The closure marks a significant loss for digital preservation efforts, particularly for PC players and industry historians who rely on large-scale archives to safeguard gaming history.
For years, Myrient has functioned as a centralized repository for legally owned game backups, allowing users to upload and access files in support of preservation. With nearly 390TB of data, it stands as one of the most extensive gaming archives ever made publicly accessible.

The Growing Importance of Video Game Preservation

As the industry shifts toward digital storefronts and subscription ecosystems, concerns around long-term access to games have intensified. Publishers and platform holders retain the right to delist titles at any time, often leaving older releases inaccessible on modern hardware. While remasters, remakes, and retro compilations provide selective solutions, they do not guarantee comprehensive preservation.
Archives such as Myrient have played a critical role in protecting rare, obscure, and commercially abandoned titles from disappearing entirely. PC gaming, in particular, has long served as a refuge for retro enthusiasts, with studies consistently showing that PC players revisit legacy titles more frequently than players on other platforms.
Without independent archival efforts, many lesser-known releases risk becoming permanently unavailable, especially those deemed unprofitable by major distributors.
Why Myrient Is Closing

In a statement posted to its Telegram channel, Myrient’s creator outlined several factors behind the decision. The most pressing issue is cost. Despite steady traffic growth, donations and funding have not kept pace. The site’s operator revealed they have been covering approximately $6,000 per month out of pocket to keep the archive running — a financial burden that is no longer sustainable.
Rising hardware costs have compounded the problem. The ongoing RAM shortage, alongside increased SSD and HDD prices, has significantly raised hosting expenses. These price surges are widely attributed to broader demand spikes in the tech sector, particularly from artificial intelligence infrastructure. As AI development accelerates, data center resources have become more expensive, indirectly impacting projects like Myrient.
Additionally, the site’s owner criticized the rise of unauthorized “specialized download managers” that restrict certain features behind paywalls, calling such practices strictly forbidden. These predatory behaviors further strained the ecosystem around the archive.
A Ripple Effect Across the Industry

Myrient’s shutdown highlights how macro-level tech trends can affect niche corners of gaming. The AI-driven hardware demand boom has not only influenced consumer PC pricing but has also disrupted preservation initiatives. Increased component costs ripple outward, impacting everything from console manufacturing to independent archival hosting.
While Myrient’s website will cease operations at the end of March, its Discord and Telegram communities will remain active. These platforms aim to serve as coordination hubs for retro enthusiasts and archivists seeking to continue preservation efforts elsewhere.
The closure of a 390TB archive underscores a broader reality: video game preservation remains fragile. As gaming continues to evolve rapidly, safeguarding its history requires sustained financial support, infrastructure stability, and ethical community participation.
For now, one of the largest digital vaults in gaming history is preparing to close its doors — a reminder that preservation is not automatic, and access to the past can never be taken for granted.
