Arc System Works has revealed Johnny as the next character for Guilty Gear Strive, as well as the release date and details on the Season 3 update.

Shown during EVO 2023, Johnny will release for Guilty Gear Strive on August 24th, sporting what appears to be a reworked moveset.

Johnny still appears to be the same neutral-based character he was in previous titles, sporting big pokes with special moves like Mist Finer.

That being said, the trailer doesn’t show him using his coin mechanic, instead having playing cards he can set up on knockdown.

As for Mist Finer, it still keeps its mixup properties, with the trailer showing the dash as well as low and mid variants of the move.

Season 3 New Features

Aside from Johnny, they also showcased two new battle mechanics coming to Guilty Gear Strive that expand the usage of the Burst Meter.

The first is called Wild Assault, and is a lunging attack that costs 50% Burst, letting you extend your combos.

Meanwhile, the second mechanic is Deflect Shield, which acts as a universal block that stops lows, highs and even projectiles for 50% Burst.

Considering Burst doesn’t fill with the same speed as the Tension Gauge, this would hypothetically create a much more risk-based gameplan, with players gambling away their Psych Burst to get an advantage with Wild Assault or getting some room with Deflect Shield.

Aside from that 6 characters will be getting new special moves, including May, Faust, Ramlethal and Anji, with the rest of the cast getting them via a later patch.
