With Final Fantasy VII Revelation set to launch in Spring 2027, director Naoki Hamaguchi is already looking ahead to what comes after the trilogy wraps up. In interviews with Game Informer and Bloomberg, he opened up about his plans once the project that has defined the last 12 years of his career finally comes to a close.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation is the third and final entry in the FF7 Remake trilogy, and unlike the first two games which were timed PlayStation exclusives, it will launch simultaneously on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, and PC. The trilogy itself dates back to 2015, when the first chapter was announced at E3, making it over a decade in the making.

When asked about what’s next, Hamaguchi was clear on one thing: it won’t be another remake. He told Bloomberg that his next project is “not going to be a remake,” and went on to say that he sees potential in different directions, whether that’s a smaller AA title, a new Final Fantasy game, or even an entirely new AAA franchise.

The topic of a Final Fantasy 6 remake did come up in his Game Informer interview, as fan discussion around that idea has been circulating online. Hamaguchi acknowledged seeing those requests but said he’d personally prefer that project go to another creator at Square Enix if it ever happened. A PR representative also noted to the publication that any talk of an FF6 remake was purely hypothetical.

As for what kind of game he does want to make, Hamaguchi pointed toward a new large-scale RPG, though he did not confirm whether it would be part of the Final Fantasy series or something different altogether. He expressed openness to both, and even noted that working outside of Final Fantasy could be an exciting creative challenge for him and his team.

For now, Hamaguchi said his full focus remains on finishing Final Fantasy VII Revelation and delivering the trilogy in the best shape possible. Fans will have to wait until after its Spring 2027 release before getting any clearer picture of what his next project will be.
