Fallout 76 is set to receive another major update, with Milepost Zero, in early September. We had the chance to interview with Lead Producer Bill LaCoste about the upcoming changes and additions to the post-apocalyptic multiplayer game.
Reflecting on Past Updates
The journey of Fallout 76 has been marked by numerous significant updates that have shaped the game’s world and gameplay. LaCoste highlighted some of the most impactful changes:
“There really are too many to choose from because throughout the 50 plus updates, we expanded the world of Appalachia in big ways!” LaCoste enthused. He specifically pointed out two major milestones: “Some of the most impactful, though, include Wastelanders, since it set the stage for life returning to Appalachia, and Steel Dawn when the Brotherhood of Steel made its way into Appalachia, building upon the story of newcomers arriving in the region.”
These updates were just the beginning. LaCoste added, “Since then, we’ve added Expeditions into The Pitt and Atlantic City, and then expanded the region into Shenandoah National Park with the Skyline Valley update.” Each of these expansions has contributed to the evolving narrative and expanding world of Fallout 76.
Blue Ridge Caravan Company Questline
The Milepost Zero update introduces a new questline centered around the Blue Ridge Caravan Company, offering players a taste of caravan life in the wasteland. While this addition opens up exciting possibilities, LaCoste was careful not to overpromise on future developments:
“It absolutely could. Caravans have been a staple of the Fallout world since the beginning, so not only having that in 76 now, but expanding on this system in the future, is certainly something we’d like to do, but don’t have any plans at the moment.”
This cautious optimism suggests that while the team is excited about the potential of the caravan system, they’re focusing on perfecting the current implementation before considering further expansions.
Legendary Crafting System
One of the most significant additions revealed in the Fallout 76 Milepost Zero interview is the Legendary Crafting system. LaCoste explained the motivation behind this new feature:
“The goal here is for players to not have to be completely reliant on getting a perfect RNG roll on a piece of equipment.”
He then detailed how the system works: “With this new system, players will be able to take some of their legendary items and scrap them for a chance to learn a recipe for a legendary effect. Once they have the recipe, then via the workbench, they can apply that effect to another item if they have the required ingredients. Players will also have a chance during the scrapping process to get a single-use legendary module that can be applied to another item.”
LaCoste emphasized that this system isn’t just about crafting; it’s designed to foster player interaction: “This system also promotes more trading amongst players.” This addition aims to give players more control over their gear progression while encouraging community engagement.
Combat Rebalancing and Outpost System
The team has made significant strides in refining the combat experience in Fallout 76. LaCoste detailed the progress and the specific changes players can expect:
“It’s easier now because our gameplay and systems teams have fixed many of the issues that would have complicated this in the past. Now we’re at a point where we have much smoother, more predictable combat difficulty, more intuitive creature strengths/weaknesses, and combat that is engaging at all levels.”
He provided examples of the adjustments made: “We made meaningful changes to some of the creatures that we felt needed them immediately such as cave crickets, gulpers, floaters, and protectrons. The result was that the damage to players had a smoother change as they leveled up, and the damage that players dealt to the creatures didn’t have sharp or extreme drops through the levels.”
The new outpost system introduces fresh gameplay elements, allowing players to upgrade and decorate their bases. LaCoste stressed the importance of this feature:
“They are essential- players are going to want to add and upgrade the vendors to the outpost. The Brahmin Tamer especially because that’ll allow players to upgrade their brahmin to deal with the tougher caravans.”
The developers have closely tied this system to the new caravan mechanics, giving players tools to enhance their trading capabilities and face new challenges. Looking ahead, LaCoste added, “For the next update, we have made those tuning adjustments to vastly more creatures, and we’ve made some nice changes to damage over time effects.” These changes aim to create a more balanced and enjoyable combat experience for players at all levels.
Additional Features
The Fallout 76 Milepost Zero interview revealed that the update isn’t just about major systems; it also includes quality-of-life improvements and new creative tools for players. LaCoste highlighted two notable additions:
“We also added in Best Builds, which allows players to create and submit C.A.M.P.s that can be voted on by other players and can allow those creations to be seen by other players across different worlds.”
This feature seems poised to showcase player creativity and foster a sense of community through shared creations. Additionally, LaCoste mentioned, “We also added in a Vendor History, so players can see a list of the items they sold in their C.A.M.P. and to who.” This feature will help players keep track of their economic activities in the game.
LaCoste concluded the Fallout 76 Milepost Zero interview on an optimistic note regarding player feedback: “As of right now, there hasn’t been much because we’ve tackled a large portion of it already, and we’re planning to release this update in early September. We’ve essentially locked things down for that release and we’re looking forward to the live feedback!”
