According to a recent VCG article, Hideki Kamiya, who had left PlatinumGames a year and a half ago and is now head of Clovers Studios, clarified that while Okami 2 is currently in development, this does not mean the studio will solely focus on producing sequels or direct successors.
In an interview with GameSpark, Kamiya and his partner Kento Koyama, who was also a previous worker of PlatinumGames, shared their thoughts on the studio’s approach to existing IPs. Koyama emphasized that Clovers Studios remains open to various possibilities when deciding on future projects. He has expressed interest in creating a sequel to an existing IP, a spiritual successor, and even an entirely new game.

Kamiya echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that the most important factor is not whether a game is based on an existing IP, but rather whether it is compelling and engaging. He mentions that if they were to develop another sequel for an existing title, it would be exciting to approach it in a way unique to the studio. Ultimately, the decision would depend on whether the project receives enough positive reception from the team or not.
He then acknowledged concerns that a new studio working on a sequel to one of his past projects might create the impression that this would define the studio’s direction. However, he reassured fans that this is not the case.
Since the studio is currently focused on this single project, it’s natural that this perception arises. Kamiya further acknowledges his appreciation for the attention it has received but emphasizes that while this may be their first project, it does not define the studio’s entire future.
