The fantasy wuxia-inspired world of Jian Xia Qing Yuan first appeared on PCs all the way back in 2003 and now it returns with Jian Xia Qing Yuan R. This remaster, 18 years after the original is coming to mobile devices.
It is being developed by Kingsoft and published in the region by VNGGames (OMG God’s of Three Kingdoms). The game will be available on the 15th of December.
The pre-registration is live for Jian Xia Qing Yuan R in Malaysia and Singapore. If you remember the old days of hi-flying battle, perhaps it’s something worth returning to. But first, why don’t we do a quick refresher of what the Jian Xia Qing Yuan series is all about.
The Legacy of Jian Xia Qing Yuan Online
Jian Xia Qing Yuan Online is an MMO RPG set in a Wuxia-style fantasy world. The game revolves around the many martial arts and sword skills found in the genre for a creative style of gameplay. Back in 2003, it pioneered the Wuxia setting and helped bring the genre and culture to greater popularity in China and other Asian regions.
Jian Xia Qing Yuan R boldly maintains the 2D classic perspective and the retro style of 18 years ago, creating an updated, but still authentic, recreation of the original game from the art style to the game mechanics.
Song and Jin on The Battle
Here’s a look at a classic battle from the game. The warring factions of Song and Jin meet on the Battlefield. This is more or less the PvP mode.
Upon entering battle, players will be randomly assigned to one of Song forces and Jin forces, and ally with players of the same camp to fight against players of the other. From here, the players must defeat the opposing team, neutral NPCs, and capture the enemy’s flag to get points for the camp.
The remaster has also successfully overcome the limitations of its predecessor. The battlefield is bigger than ever with thousands of characters fighting on the same screen, all fitted onto your simple mobile phone.
Selling Your Swords
What is Wuxia without a good selection of weapons? In Jian Xia Qing Yuan R, players can obtain all new equipment with random attributes during the gameplay. From swords to spears, you don’t know quite what you’ll get but if you don’t want to use it, you may still be able to use it for profit.
Players can just set up a street stall and start selling these items to other players. With the return of the free trading system, the players can earn a profit by selling unneeded equipment to others. It’s a simple, yet effective way of sparking an in-universe economy that will likely keep players occupied even when not clashing swords.
Wu Xing Elements
If you’ve heard of the traditional western elements, Water, Earth, Wind, and Fire traditional Chinese culture has a similar concept, the Wu Xing which consists of the elements of Water, Earth, Fire, Wood, and Metal. These have also been incorporated into the game.
The player must select one of the Wu Xing elements which will in turn affect which ten martial arts clans you can join and by extension what attacks your character can learn. These clans include well-known Chinese schools including Wu-Tang, EMei, Shaolin, and more. Every clan has its strengths and weaknesses. It’ll be up to you to figure which of them fits your style of play the most.
