It’s been about a week since ONE PUNCH MAN: The Strongest launched in Southeast Asian territories, opening up the world of the titular strongest to people in the region. The game, developed by PlayCrab and distributed by Finger Fun Entertainment, invites everyone to make teams of their favourite heroes and villains to play through the story of ONE PUNCH MAN. Over three million of you downloaded the game till nowon its launch day, which makes it no surprise to see the title featured on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store with such immense popularity.
To thank all you Southeast Asian players for enthusiastically registering for ONE PUNCH MAN: The Strongest, Genos’ voice actor, Ishikawa Kaito, has a special message for all of you!
Now then, let us head into a breakdown of the game:
RUNNING THROUGH TOWN
The graphics are clean while still keeping the style you know and love from the anime. You have the smaller character models running around on screen, and the larger, animated ones in their details page. The main story has seamless transitions between the 2D models and the anime cutscenes, so you can truly feel like you are playing through the anime! A similar treatment is given to your characters’ ultimate skills. As promised, the original voice actor cast returns to reprise their roles, for that authentic OPM experience.
Some characters also come with Core skills, which rewards you for having a variety of characters. Take a look at Doctor Genus’ Core Skill below, which has both a “Novice” and “Advanced” requirement. Fulfill these conditions with a good selection of heroes or monsters, and take advantage of these bonuses! Only one Core Skill can be active at a time, and the character also needs to be in your party, so you will need to decide what kind of team you want to build.
Battles occur in a turn-based system, with a turn order shown at the bottom of your screen. Some skills will require spirit that your characters can earn over turns, to unleash their attacks. Some characters will have traits or skills to specifically target a row or column, so keep an eye out for that. If you think you might be in trouble, hang in there and Saitama will come to immediately defeat a single enemy for you too!
There are both Normal and Heroic level quests, then there are Boss Challenges that are more challenging than these regular quests. Defeating a Boss will give you Limit Break materials, mentioned below.
The initial story chapters will follow through the various episodes of the anime, using the same characters featured in their respective episodes. That’s what we can call immersing yourself into the story, eh?
CLIMBING THE HERO RANKS
You don’t start out with a full six slots in your team. You need to go out into the world to level up and prove yourself to be the hero you want to be. You’ll be able to recruit more from the gacha and have anywhere between your S-Class Heroes to Monsters and Outlaws in your team. Each of them will also have their own class – Brawler, Hi-Tech as examples – and you’ll want to have a balanced distribution of them to take advantage of teamwide stat boosts! Some characters who may be related to each other also have their own bonuses when they are in the team together! Can you find all the combinations?
There will be quests you can clear through, and completing them with 3-stars will let you claim even more rewards. On completing an area, you may also trigger Map events that can give you coins, or materials. Yes, you can run around the quest map, as well as the main “lobby” town area. You and other heroes-in-training can set your favourite avatars to represent your character of choice.
After some point, you can participate in the arena to go up against other players. If you prefer not to, you can also join a Club – the Guild system – and practice against your other Club members instead. The Club also lets you take on additional quests for Medals. Besides that, you can also request for character shards – only for those you own – to further upgrade your character.
SELF-IMPROVEMENT
You do quests to get your player rank up, but what about the characters themselves? Each of them will be able to evolve, limit break and level up their skills, among other things. Evolving happens whenever a character reaches their current level limit, and gives them a boost to their stats. Levelling up skills is exactly what it says, with their max level capping out at whatever player rank you are currently at. Last but not least is the limit break system, which will add a star rank to a character once they level up their passive skills.
Later on, you’ll get to meet up with Saitama chilling out in his apartment, and he can also run a few quests you can queue up for him to help you get items. That’s not all, you can acquire pieces of a whole picture, putting them together like a puzzle, to complete an iconic moment within the anime. Doing so will also provide passive stat increases for your characters as a whole!
