Overwatch has confirmed Echo to be its next new hero. Echo’s origin story was posted, giving more context to her after her initial appearance during an earlier McCree cinematic – “Reunion” – where she had appeared. She also appeared in the Overwatch 2 cinematic “Zero Hour”, but we still didn’t have the best idea on who she really is. All we’d gotten so far was: Echo’s an omnic, saved by McCree, and now assisting Overwatch.

With this origin story, more mysteries have been slightly uncovered. If you recall, there are six founders of Overwatch: Soldier 76, Reaper, Ana, Reinhardt, Torbjorn and Mina Liao. The first five are accounted for, so who is Liao?

Dr. Mina Liao herself appears in Echo’s origin story, showing how she helped create the omnics who she later saw rampaging across the world in a global war. As penance, she joined Overwatch, and in doing so, created our next hero, in Echo. The highly sophisticated omnic AI has picked up Liao’s mannerisms, voice, and mission; a literal echo of her creator, in other words.

Liao herself appears to have died in an attack on her lab, now partially living on through her omnic creation. With this revelation, it would be interesting to see how she interacts with the rest of the cast, especially with the other founders.

Echo should be arriving to the Overwatch test servers soon, so we’ll see what she brings to the table.
