For those of you wondering why some may be so hyped about Granblue Fantasy: Versus, part of it comes down to the characters. If you have no idea what Granblue Fantasy is, but may be interested in getting the fighting game, then read on to get a primer on the starting line-up of characters! Maybe this would get you to try the main game? P.S.: Getting a copy of GBVS will provide you bonuses in the mobile game. 
GRAN
WHO IS HE?
The main character of Granblue Fantasy, the anime’s main protagonist. “Gran” is derived from the first part of the game’s name, with his female counterpart, Djeeta, taken from the “Fantasy” part in Japanese, read in reverse.
Basically your self-insert protagonist, with his personality taken from the anime adaptation. The captain of the airship Grandcypher and its crew, this young boy from the quiet island of Zinkenstill would have no idea how far his journey takes him. Spurred on by a letter from his father telling him to find him at Estalucia, the land of Astrals, he looks every forward.
WHAT DOES HE DO IN THE MAIN GAME?
As the main character, everything! Game mechanics wise, he’s the most flexible character, able to swap to any class as required and is almost assuredly the strongest one in the party.
STORY EVENTS HE’S INVOLVED IN
Once again, due to being a self-insert or at least, your point of view for the game, he’s in all of them with varying degrees of involvement depending on the story.

Always available, with no alternate versions except for skins.
KATALINA
WHO IS SHE?
Full name Katalina Aryze, the first story SR character you obtain in the main game. She is a former lieutenant of the antagonistic Erste Empire, sworn to protect the girl in blue, Lyria. She is serious, steadfast and has a certain weakness for cute things. Also a lethal cook. She has history with a girl named Vira Lillie, with whom she was former classmates with. The journey is long and arduous for Katalina, but she does not regret her decision to defect.
WHAT DOES SHE DO IN THE MAIN GAME?
She has a spot in being an early available Water-elemental defensive character, able to provide a heal, debuff cancel and damage reduction. All her playable versions have similar kits: heal, debuff cancel/clear, and damage reduction, allowing her to fill a defensive role.
STORY EVENTS SHE’S INVOLVED IN
While one of your earliest allies, she typically does not appear much in events that do not explicitly have her as the featured character. She has more focus in the main story, and has some screen time in the anniversary event series of What Makes the Sky Blue.

CHARLOTTA
WHO IS SHE?
Full name Charlotta Fenia, she is a Harvin, a race of tiny people in Granblue Fantasy. Don’t be fooled by her stature, for she is the captain of the esteemed Lumiel Holy Knights. She strictly upholds the knights’ creed of “Forever pure, forever righteous”. She frets about her height and may come off insecure regarding her position as captain. Her fellow Holy Knights, Baotorda, Cordelia, Bridgette and her butler, Sevastien, all have playable versions in the game.
WHAT DOES SHE DO IN THE MAIN GAME?
Charlotta has both offensive- and defensive-slanted playable versions. She can provide damage reduction, nukes, and with her Halloween version, even create healing potions. Depending on which version you have, she can fill either role as required.
STORY EVENTS SHE’S INVOLVED IN
Primarily featured collectively with her fellow Holy Knights. She’s made an appearance in the anniversary event series What Makes the Sky Blue, as well as participating in the summer-themed events. Her focus event is Little Skyfarer a la Sacre Blumiel! featuring her playable event version.

LANCELOT
WHO IS HE?
Captain of the White Dragon Knights of the Kingdom of Feendrache. He’s aided by his childhood friend and vice-captain, Vane. He and Vane, alongside Percival and Siegfried, make the Dragon Knights. The Dragon Knights storyline has also expanded to include knights-in-training Arthur, Mordred, Cruz and Tornelio – whom Vane dubs the Chickadees. He may seem serious and definitely highly capable in battle, but is shockingly incapable of tidying.
WHAT DOES HE DO IN THE MAIN GAME?
His original version is capable of high damage with easily spammable nukes and high multi-attack rate. He has a more team-support focused version as well. As a dual unit with Vane, they combine Lancelot’s damaging skills with Vane’s defensive capabilities for a stronger package together.

As you might expect, he’s involved in the series of Dragon Knights events which include, in order:

PERCIVAL
WHO IS HE?
The Lord of Flames hails from the Kingdom of Wales, ruled over by his elder brother Aglovale. He’s the youngest of three, with Lamorak being the middle child who has yet to be seen as an adult. He was formerly affiliated under the Black Dragon Knights of Feendrache, captained by Siegfried, until certain incidents occurred. Has a rivalry with Lancelot. Seeks to recruit strong vassals – one being yourself, as Gran/Djeeta – and wishes to build an utopian country. He may seem standoffish, but he has a kind heart and steadfast ideals.
WHAT DOES HE DO IN THE MAIN GAME?
Primarily an attacker across the board, capable of buffing himself and using strong nukes. His original version enables him to keep himself alive with a heal attached to his nuke, which he can also doublecast. Has a personal ability that makes him even stronger the more allies he has.
STORY EVENTS HE’S INVOLVED IN
As one of the Dragon Knights, you will find him in the relevant events alongside Lancelot. His focus event was Between Frost and Flame, that also includes his brother, Aglovale.

LYRIA
WHO IS SHE?
While not a playable character per se, Lyria is nonetheless incredibly important. She is the one who shares her life force with Gran/Djeeta at the very beginning of the story. She is able to summon Primal Beasts, virtually god-like beings that allows her to borrow their power. The girl herself is shrouded in mystery, her past unknown prior to first being captured by the Erste Empire. Katalina breaks her out, and so the journey will continue.
WHAT DOES SHE DO IN THE MAIN GAME?
She appears beside the main character when you want to use summons. She’s arguably the biggest heart of the crew, her nigh-incorruptible purity always looking for the best in people. As a playable unit, she doesn’t attack, but can buff her allies and allows you to double summon.
STORY EVENTS SHE’S INVOLVED IN
As with Gran and Djeeta, she appears in every story, and is naturally also important in the main scenario.

VYRN
WHO IS HE?
Also not playable, but he’s your bestest friend who’s been with you ever since you were a kid. Both of you have left Zinkenstill in search of your father, and will always be together through thick and thin. Vyrn himself seems to have a few secrets of his own. Also a dragon, and not a lizard.
WHAT DOES HE DO IN THE MAIN GAME?
Probably what you might call a mascot character. Follows the crew around in their adventures, while not possessing a playable unit of his own.
STORY EVENTS HE’S INVOLVED IN
As with the main character and Lyria, he’s involved in all of them. Also the star of the April Fool’s events, where you will find him as Macho Vyrn(?).
AVAILABILITY IN GRANBLUE FANTASY
No playable unit.
