Acer Predator Triton 900 review: The RM15,999 Beast

This time we review the Acer Predator Triton 900, a quite impressive piece of gaming laptop tech with a price to match. This Acer laptop, as you might guess from the name, does take some inspiration from the Acer Predator Helios 700. Its price might be exorbitant, but it certainly does have the power to justify the asking price! It has an adjustable 4K screen, 9^th-gen Core i9 processor and NVIDIA RTX 2080. Without further ado, let’s see what this RM15,999 machine can do.

What differentiates the Acer Predator Tritono 900 from other gaming laptops is its Ezel Aero Hinge. This allows the user to spin the screen and move it around to various positions that cannot be done by typical laptops. This flexibility allows the screen to be moved closer to your face, spin it 180 degrees to make it face the other way, or to flatten it like a tablet. If you’d like the classic “clamshell” look, that won’t be a problem either. The Triton 900’s metal chassis has quite the premium design, which is surprisingly thin at 23.8mm.

Considering the cooling system takes up the bulk of the Triton 900’s body, the keyboard isn’t given much space. Users will have a lack of space to rest their hands, and can be a sore point, since both typing and gaming aren’t likely to be very comfortable.

Five macro keys are on the keyboard. The middle three can be customized, while the “P” key on the left most side allows users to choose among three different macro programs as you see fit. The Turbo key on the right most side will get the fans whirring for even better cooling.

Connectivity wise, the Acer Predator Triton 900 is full of ports. The left has two USB Type-A 3.1 ports, one slightly hidden as a pop-out design, and 3.5mm jacks for headset and microphone. The right has a Kensington lock slot, two USB Type-C 3.1 Gen 2 (Thunderbolt 3, DisplayPort) ports, one USB-A 3.1 and Gigabit Ethernet.

Behind that is a DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.0 besides the port for the adaptor. The adaptor has quite the heft to it, bringing the overall weight of the setup to a whopping 4.5kg. The Triton 900 is designed to be a desktop replacement, so it’s certainly more likely to spend its time on a desk full time than taken outside.

The Acer Predator Triton 900 is probably one of the best machines you can get carrying the 9^th-gen Core i9 processor and RTX 2080. Besides that, you’ll also be getting 32GB RAM DDR4 and two 512GB RAID0 SSDs to ensure a fast read on your games and plenty of space for videos, images and so forth. The RTX 2080 GPU allows users to play AAA games at a comfortable frame rate when the resolution is raised to 3840 x 2160. With ray-tracing support, those games are going to look one hell of a pretty, for users to eat that eye candy.

The Acer Predator Triton 900 is a gaming laptop capable of overclocking. It’s easy to do using Predator Sense. Through the program, you can also change the RGB lights, your macro keys and pick from three overclocking mods on the Triton 900: Normal, Fast, Extreme. Heating is hardly an issue when it has an incredible cooling system.

The fans of the Triton 900 sucks air from the outside through three holes, channeling that air into the heatpipes to ensure always-cool CPU and GPU. The hot air is expelled through four different holes: two on the back, and one on each side.

Moving on to the screen; you have a 4K Ultra HD LCD 17.3-inch screen with IPS technology for those details and many great viewing angles. The colour coverage is great too, for that immersive gaming experience. The screen is definitely one of the best you can get in a gaming laptop, where most manufacturers tend to cut in this department to lower costs. Colours are sharp and vivid here, compared to a Full HD panel.

It is, then, unfortunate that the Triton 900’s screen can only achieve 60Hz, so frames are capped at 60fps. Screens with over 60Hz refresh rates have smoother visuals, which is especially important for say, competitive FPS players. Besides that, the Triton 900 also has an incredibly short battery life, merely 1h 41 minutes when run with PCMark 8.

The Acer Predator Triton 900 is mostly recommended only if you really have the money to spare, and you’re willing to sacrifice the screen refresh rate for an admittedly great 4K screen.
