By way of South Korea-based game developer Smilegate, we have a new hero collector RPG in the form of Epic Seven that launched globally now. We will go straight to the point here. If you have played any other game of this kind elsewhere, there is nothing new per se to be found here. Where Epic Seven shines however is in its production values.

Despite the cheesy dialogue which is unfortunately voiced only in Korean and English, the overarching story is rather interesting and engaging. But yes, let us first address the fact that despite this being a game that draws its influences from anime, there is no Japanese cast, at least in the global version.

We may see a Japanese version down the line, but it is unfortunate that this is not an inclusion, given that other developers have realised that part of the appeal of such games are the seiyuus. Even games made initially for the Chinese market use Japanese voice actresses for their cast because that is what their intended audience wants. While we did not try the Korean voice option, the English one is, as expected, downright awful, which detracts from the overall experience. Now that the rant is over, let us return to the game itself.

Again, there is nothing particularly original to mention here, as this is a turned based side-scrolling RPG. The graphics and animations are top notch. Combat is fairly elementary and just requires you to tap to attack using preset abilities that require souls to use. Souls are in turn obtained from defeating enemies. There is an elemental weakness and strength system in place, but that is fairly straightforward too. Once your soul gauge has been maxed out, you will be able to use charge attacks or summons to quickly decimate the enemy.

Admittedly, we are very early in the game, so it is difficult to gauge how much content there is to speak of at the moment. The campaign is sizeable and there are side battles you can partake in. There is also the inclusion of PVP for you to test your team against.

Play through Epic Seven with practically no loading times in the highest quality. Dive into a journey through an unknown world. Spectacular eye candy that will keep your brain stimulated. One issue that seems to be a concern amongst other players, particularly that of the Korean version, the game leans heavily towards P2W, and while we are unable to verify that at this point, one thing is evident is that the gacha rate is not particularly favorable. For the time being, we are able to power through the content with low rarity units, but that may change later on.

As it stands, there is a lot to like about Epic Seven, but only time will tell if our sentiments about it is different in the coming months.
