Among the biggest news unveiled was the return of fan-favorite FF characters, including Clive Rosenfield, Lightning, and Noctis—but with a slight twist. The game will feature them as “visions,” which characters can summon during combat for added assistance.
These visions are like Espers from Final Fantasy VI, which were also announced to return in FF Resonance. Among the revealed Esper summons are Bahamut, Odin, and Leviathan. Speaking of returns, the studio also announced the arrival of recurring Final Fantasy antagonist Gilgamesh.
Square Enix confirmed that Gilgamesh will be a formidable opponent. Meanwhile the Ultima Weapon awaits players as one of the game’s toughest challenges.
The latest info drop from Square Enix also introduced players to the worlds they’re about to explore in Final Fantasy Resonance. Firstly, the Zoldaad Empire is described as a powerful military nation built around the Fire Crystal. Meanwhile, Mysidia is the legendary city of mages associated with the Ice Crystal.
Gameplay-wise, Final Fantasy Resonance is going back to its roots with its strategic turn-based combat. Furthermore, Resonance is reintroducing Limit Bursts, which are these powerful and cinematic attacks after filling up their limit gauge.

What seals this game as a love letter to OG Final Fantasy fans is its visuals. FF Resonance is the first HD 2D in the franchise. With enhanced dynamic camera angles and pixelized 3D models, it evokes nostalgia without losing immersion.
Final Fantasy Resonance is scheduled to launch on October 22. Pre-orders are now available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, and PC.
