France and Saudi Arabia have just reached an agreement to develop three major theme parks near Paris, one of which is based on one of the most influential anime in pop culture, Dragon Ball. The deal amounted to a staggering $7 billion, making it one of France’s biggest entertainment investments since Disneyland Paris.

The agreement was finalized during Saudi Arabia’s de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s two-day visit to France. However, an adviser to French President Emmanuel Macron stated the idea stemmed from 2024 when the two leaders discovered their shared passion for Manga, more particularly, Dragon Ball Z.

According to the agreement, the Dragon Ball theme park will be located near Cergy-Pontoise, which is 30 kilometers northwest of the capital. The development is being backed by Saudi entertainment and investment group Qiddiya.

The three parks are expected to be constructed and opened in stages over several years, and while the first theme park was confirmed to be Manga-themed, there’s no information regarding the other two attractions yet.

No further details regarding the Dragon Ball theme park have been revealed. However, if it’s anything like the one that’s already in development at Qiddiya City near Riyadh, it could be featuring more than 30 attractions inspired by the franchise.

Aside from boosting tourism and transcending the acclaimed anime beyond TV screens and manga, the project is also expected to generate around 22,000 direct jobs. It also forms part of a broader series of economic deals between France and Saudi Arabia involving tourism, artificial intelligence, energy, transportation, and defense.

For Dragon Ball fans, however, the announcement represents Goku and other DBZ characters’ further expansion 40 years after its inception.
