Final Fantasy VII Rebirth didn’t get any content after launch, but the third and final part of the remake trilogy might get a DLC, depending on how fans respond to it. Series director Naoki Hamaguchi recently spoke to Ntower about why Rebirth skipped story DLC, and also opened the door to the possibility of post-launch content for Part 3.
According to Hamaguchi, the team did consider making story DLC for Rebirth, but ultimately decided against it. “When it came to Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, we seriously considered the possibility of developing a story DLC right up until immediately before the project officially moved into the planning phase,” he said.

The main reason for dropping it came down to protecting the quality and schedule of Part 3. Hamaguchi explained that developing DLC for Rebirth at the same time as the third game “would inevitably affect the third game’s schedule and overall quality.” His priority, he said, was to get Part 3 into players’ hands as quickly as possible and at a quality level fans would be happy with.
This lines up with what Hamaguchi said back in late 2024, when he noted that fans wanted to see the third part of the series as soon as possible, which played into the decision to skip Rebirth DLC. It’s a different path from what happened with the first game. Final Fantasy 7 Remake received an enhanced version called Intergrade in 2021, which included a new story expansion called Episode Intermission. Rebirth, which launched on PS5 in February 2024, did not get the same treatment.
As for what comes after Part 3, Hamaguchi left the door open. “As for DLC beyond the third installment, I believe that will ultimately depend on how strongly fans continue to support Final Fantasy 7 as both a title and a franchise. If there is significant demand, we’d certainly be open to exploring those possibilities proactively,” he said.
In the meantime, players on other platforms will soon be able to experience Rebirth for the first time. The game is set to launch on Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S on June 3 with a demo currently available, bringing those players up to speed with PS5 owners ahead of the trilogy’s conclusion.
