Subnautica 2 has officially removed Krafton as its publisher across its Steam and Epic Games Store listings, signaling a major shift in the game’s publishing direction following a high-profile legal dispute involving developer Unknown Worlds Entertainment.
The change appears to position Subnautica 2 as a self-published title under Unknown Worlds Entertainment, although Krafton still owns the studio. The update comes amid ongoing legal fallout between the companies and follows a court ruling that reinstated former Unknown Worlds leadership.
Legal Dispute Leads to Leadership Reinstatement

The shift in publishing credits follows a lawsuit filed by former Unknown Worlds leaders, including Max McGuire and Ted Gill, against Krafton for wrongful termination. The court ultimately ruled in favor of the former leadership, ordering their reinstatement and overturning their dismissal.
As part of the legal proceedings, it was also revealed that Krafton had reportedly explored using AI tools such as ChatGPT to evaluate strategies related to a potential $250 million bonus payout tied to Subnautica 2’s internal development milestones. The court ruling also required Krafton to honor the bonus agreement for the development team.
Despite disputing aspects of the ruling, Krafton stated it would continue working with Unknown Worlds moving forward.
Store Listings Now Show Unknown Worlds as Publisher

Following the court decision, Subnautica 2 listings on both Steam and the Epic Games Store have been updated, removing Krafton as publisher and listing Unknown Worlds Entertainment as both developer and publisher.
The change has not been officially clarified by either party, and it remains unclear whether this signals a long-term publishing restructuring or a temporary adjustment during ongoing legal and corporate realignment.
At the time of writing, Subnautica 2 is still planned for Early Access release in 2026. However, the previously suggested May 2026 Early Access window has become uncertain, with no firm release date currently confirmed.
Ongoing Uncertainty Around Development and Release Plans

The leadership changes have also created uncertainty around Subnautica 2’s development timeline. While earlier statements from Unknown Worlds indicated a potential May 2026 Early Access launch, the current public release window now simply points to 2026.
With former leadership returning and Krafton’s role under scrutiny, it remains to be seen how much influence the publisher will retain over the project going forward.
Community Reaction and Franchise Expectations

Following the removal of Krafton from store pages, some players have taken to social media to express support for Unknown Worlds by wishlisting Subnautica 2 on digital storefronts. The situation has also reignited broader discussions about publisher influence, studio autonomy, and the increasing role of AI tools in corporate decision-making.
Despite the controversy, Subnautica 2 remains one of the most anticipated survival games in development. Known for its underwater exploration, alien ecosystems, and atmospheric survival gameplay, the sequel continues to generate strong interest from fans of the original Subnautica.

As development continues, Subnautica 2 is expected to launch into Early Access in 2026 on PC and Xbox platforms, though its final publishing structure and release timing may still evolve depending on the outcome of ongoing corporate developments.
