Koei Tecmo and Team NINJA have announced a playable demo for FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE, launching on March 5. In addition, the publishers confirmed a special crossover with Silent Hill f. This collaboration will introduce free costume downloadable content to both horror titles at a later date.
Meanwhile, the full remake will release shortly after the demo. As a result, players can sample the modernized experience before its official launch. This early access offers a first look at one of the most iconic entries in the FATAL FRAME franchise.
A Horror Classic Rebuilt from the Ground Up

FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE retells the haunting story of twin sisters Mio and Mayu. The pair wander into a cursed, abandoned village filled with vengeful spirits. With no conventional weapons, players rely entirely on the Camera Obscura, a mystical camera that captures and seals ghosts.
As the story unfolds, supernatural threats grow more aggressive. Consequently, survival demands careful movement, timing, and resource management.
This remake also adds new content. It introduces extra side stories, expanded locations, and a completely new ending. Notably, the ending features the song “Utsushie,” composed by Tsuki Amano, which adds emotional weight to the narrative.
New Mechanics, Locations, and Combat Depth

During exploration, players can now use Broken Spirit Stones to uncover memories from the past. As a result, the game expands its lore and character backstories. New locations, including the Umbral Mound and Eikado Temple, further strengthen environmental storytelling and atmosphere.
Combat also evolves as players progress. Some spirits can enter a crimson state, which increases their speed, strength, and regeneration. To counter this, players can equip Prayer Beads to enhance the Camera Obscura. These upgrades improve reload speed and focus effectiveness. Additionally, Reversion Beads allow players to reset upgrades, offering more flexibility in combat builds.
Expanded Camera Obscura and Photo Mode

The Camera Obscura gains new Special Shot options through equippable filters. These filters allow players to adapt their approach. Some disrupt enemies, while others offer high-risk, high-reward damage.
Outside of combat, the camera serves another purpose. Players can purify Twin Dolls scattered throughout the village. Doing so unlocks rewards through the Point Exchange system.
Furthermore, the remake introduces a Photo Mode. Players can capture scenes using frames, stickers, and visual effects, blending horror with creativity.
Silent Hill f Collaboration and Release Information

To close things out, Koei Tecmo confirmed a collaboration with Silent Hill f. Free costume downloadable content inspired by the Silent Hill universe will arrive in a future update, with more details coming soon.
FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE launches on March 12 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam. The demo will be available on the same platforms starting March 5.
Overall, the remake aims to preserve the original’s tension while expanding its systems, story, and presentation for modern players.
