Riot Games is working on a large-scale overhaul of League of Legends, its main game that draws more than 100 million monthly players. The new version of League of Legends, called League Next inside the company, is planned for release in 2027. Five current and former employees describe it as the biggest update in the game’s history, according to Bloomberg.
The update will redesign the game’s visuals, including characters, user interface, and battle arenas, to attract more new players. Developers are rebuilding the technical foundation to make future updates easier to release. Riot recently added new keyboard controls designed to help beginners.

The company has also reorganized its employees, according to people familiar with the matter who requested anonymity because the information has not been made public, Bloomberg reported.
Following Bloomberg’s report, Riot posted a video confirming the major update. The video mentioned changes to the game launcher and gameplay. “We’re overhauling the new player experience, so that once we’re done, it should be the best time ever to get your friends into League,” said Paul Bellezza, League of Legends executive producer.
