Square Enix is bringing Dragon Quest VII back with a full 3D remake called Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, and according to producer Takeshi Ichikawa, the timing is intentional. In an interview with Game*Spark, Ichikawa explained that modern gaming audiences may appreciate the game’s darker themes more than players did when it first launched.
The remake arrives during the 25th anniversary of Dragon Quest VII’s original PlayStation 1 release, but Ichikawa says the anniversary isn’t the only reason for the project. The development team believes current players are ready for the game’s heavier narrative content.

“We decided to launch the project for Dragon Quest VII Reimagined because we felt that the game’s unique atmosphere and tone would resonate especially well with players today,” Ichikawa told Game*Spark. “Back when it first came out, VII was often said to have more dark and sorrowful episodes compared to other entries in the series. But nowadays, players are much more accustomed to games with darker stories.”
Dragon Quest VII stands out in the series for its somber storytelling. The game’s structure revolves around undoing past tragedies, which means players encounter frequent scenes of death, despair, and loss throughout its lengthy campaign. While the original received praise for its ambitious scope, its darker tone set it apart from the typically lighter Dragon Quest games.

Ichikawa noted that the remake will keep the original story and dialogue intact.
“I believe that, through this new version, modern players will be able to feel VII’s story and the emotions of the characters even more deeply.”
The remake uses hand-made doll visuals for a cheerful, diorama-like appearance that contrasts with the serious narrative. Unlike the HD-2D style used in other recent Dragon Quest remakes, Dragon Quest VII Reimagined opts for a fully 3D approach. Dragon Quest VII Reimagined launches February 5, 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S.
