The gaming industry has seen explosive growth over the past two decades, with digital game purchases and top-ups becoming increasingly popular among players worldwide. We recently had the opportunity to sit down with Lim Chin Han, a 20-year gaming industry veteran and founder of GameCharge, to discuss his latest venture and shed light on some common misconceptions about game pin purchases.
Lim’s career has taken him through major companies including Huawei’s game division and European gaming marketplace Eneba.com, before he decided to launch his own venture.
His extensive background in game publishing and working with established gaming companies has given him unique insights into the industry’s inner workings, which he’s now applying to his own business.
Addressing the “Grey Market” Concerns
One of the most pressing issues Lim wanted to address is the common misconception that all game pin purchases exist in a legal grey area. He acknowledges that some illegitimate options do exist in the marketplace, but emphasizes that legitimate businesses operate very differently.

“Actually, in the game pin or game top-up this field, there are grey, what we call it, illegitimate pin or game top-up that user might purchase in the marketplace or other web store,” he explains.
“If the price is way cheaper than the official price, normally it is a grey area inventory,” Lim points out, offering consumers a simple way to identify potentially problematic sellers.
For his own business, he’s clear about his sourcing: “For my case, my own company, GameCharge.net, I got all my sources from the official distributor. I would say 100%, we are all getting the source from the official source.”
Understanding the Supply Chain
The game pin industry operates through a fairly straightforward distribution system. Game publishers work with official distributors rather than managing relationships with every individual retailer directly.
At the top of the chain are the principals – the game publishers themselves. These are companies like Sony (for PlayStation), Microsoft (for Xbox), Nintendo, Valve (for Steam), and others who create and own the gaming platforms or specific games. “Let’s say Game A, we get it from the direct publisher themselves,” Lim explains.

“The game publisher cannot be selling to all the web store or all the reseller themselves. It’s very tedious for them to manage so many accounts,” Lim added.
This is where official distributors come into play. “So, what we do in every region, the game principal or the game company will appoint one to two official distributors,” Lim explains.
These distributors serve as intermediaries, purchasing large quantities of game pins or credits from publishers and then selling them to retailers in smaller, more manageable quantities.
GameCharge’s Current Offerings
GameCharge currently stocks pins and top-ups for about 20 major gaming brands, covering the industry’s biggest names. “Right now, I sell most of the major brands. PS, PSN, Nintendo, Xbox, all the major brands that you can name are already available on my web store,” Lim says.
The selection also includes Steam Credit, Roblox, EA Play, and Candy Crush, among others.

While the focus is primarily on PC and console gaming, GameCharge also serves mobile gamers. For some mobile games like PUBG, Minecraft, and Roblox, they offer traditional pins. For others, they provide direct top-up services where purchases are delivered directly to players’ accounts in-game.
Two Types of Purchase: Pins and Direct Top-Up
GameCharge offers two distinct purchasing methods. Traditional game pins operate like digital gift cards and represent the more established method of purchasing gaming content. “Game Pin is something that you buy from us, and after that, we will send the pin to you through your email,” Lim explains.

Direct top-up operates differently and more conveniently.
“You come to our website, you just need to key in your user ID and the server that you are playing the game, and after you complete the payment, the item that you purchase will be delivered to you in-game directly,” Lim explains.

The direct top-up system requires GameCharge to maintain API connections with game publishers, which demonstrates the legitimacy of their operations.
“Yeah, of course. Because we’ve got our API connected with the game publisher or official distributors. Otherwise, how are we able to do that?” Lim responds when asked about the legitimacy of direct top-ups.
These API connections aren’t available to unauthorized sellers and represent a significant technical and business achievement.
Building Trust Through Transparency
At its core, GameCharge’s mission centers on four key principles: quick, safe, reliable, and reasonable prices. “The ultimate goal for GameCharge is to bring users a whole new experience of buying and top-up the game,” Lim states.
“We will make sure all our pin, the source of our pin and also the source of this game top-up are from the legitimate source, be it directly from the principal or the official distributor.”

As the gaming industry continues to evolve and digital purchases become even more commonplace, GameCharge represents a different approach to enhancing the customer experience while maintaining legitimate business practices. Whether Lim’s gamification vision will resonate with consumers remains to be seen, but his commitment to transparency and safety provides a solid foundation for building trust in the gaming community.
