In the latest reveal for the Magic: The Gathering x Final Fantasy collaboration, it has been confirmed that renowned illustrator Tetsuya Nomura contributed new artwork featuring Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII for an upcoming card.

One version of this artwork showcases Safer Sephiroth, the final boss form from the original Final Fantasy VII game. In a statement released alongside the illustrations, Nomura has noted that there’s a specific reason why this version of Safer Sephiroth differs from the original design, though he was unable to elaborate further due to undisclosed circumstances.

This subtle redesign may hint at what fans can expect in the concluding chapter of the Final Fantasy VII Remake series. Regardless, Nomura’s comment adds an intriguing layer to the collaboration:

“For this card, I illustrated Sephiroth on both the front and back. I actually designed them to connect when stacked, so if you manage to obtain two of the same card and place them together, you’ll see the complete original illustration. As for the altered design of Safer Sephiroth, there is a reason behind it—but unfortunately, I can’t share any details at this time.” – Tetsuya Nomura
