Sony is rolling out a new system software update for PlayStation 5 (PS5) consoles starting April 24, introducing two highly anticipated features based on player feedback. The update focuses on enhancing audio accessibility and bringing back nostalgic UI customization options that were previously available as a limited-time feature.

Audio Focus Feature Enhances Sound Control

The new Audio Focus feature aims to improve gaming immersion by allowing players to amplify specific sound elements when using headphones or headsets. This accessibility-focused tool offers preset options that make it easier to distinguish certain audio elements like character dialogue, environmental sounds, and party chat voices.

Players can select from four distinct preset focus types:

• Boost Low Pitch: Enhances low-frequency sounds like engines and rumbling
• Boost Voices: Amplifies character dialogue and voice chat in the mid-frequency range
• Boost High Pitch: Highlights high-frequency sounds such as footsteps and metallic noises
• Boost Quiet Sounds: Increases volume across a range of quiet sounds regardless of frequency

Each preset can be adjusted with three intensity levels (Weak, Medium, Strong), and users can even customize the left and right audio channels separately. The feature can be accessed through the Settings menu or directly via the Control Center during gameplay, though it’s only available when using headphones connected via USB or analog jack.

Classic Console UI Designs Return Permanently

Following overwhelming positive feedback during PlayStation’s 30th anniversary celebrations, Sony is permanently reintroducing the nostalgic UI customization options that let players transform their PS5 interface to match the look and feel of previous PlayStation consoles.

This feature, now called “Appearance,” allows users to customize their PS5 home screen with design elements inspired by the original PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4 consoles. The option can be accessed through the Settings menu. The update will roll out globally in phases beginning April 24, continuing Sony’s commitment to enhancing the PS5 experience based on community feedback.
