Guessing we won’t be seeing any more Mario & Sonic games for the Olympics as the IOC (International Olympics Committee) has decided not to renew the licensing agreement for the franchise according to Eurogamer. This marks the end of the Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games series that started in 2007.

The latest entry, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 was released on November 1, 2019 on the Nintendo Switch. It was the same time when the IOC decided to explore other gaming avenues such as NFTs and esports. Consequently, the Paris 2024 Olympics will not feature a corresponding Mario & Sonic game, marking the first Summer Olympics in three decades without a dedicated console game​.

For nearly two decades, Nintendo and Sega have been releasing Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games titles to align with the global sporting event. According to Lee Cocker, a developer who worked on the series, the IOC chose not to renew the licensing agreement, leading to the franchise’s discontinuation.

There is an Olympics video game this year but it hasn’t been seeing headlines much. Titled Olympics Go! Paris 2024, it is a mobile game featuring minigames based on Olympic events. According to the game’s website, players are able to claim an “officially licensed, commemorative Paris 2024 NFT Digital Pin.” Check out the trailer below.
