Legendary Entertainment has acquired the film and TV rights to Capcom’s Street Fighter, according to deadline.

In their report it is said that Legendary Entertainment is currently working on a feature film with Capcom as well as all future projects.

It is important to take note as well that there is no release date mentioned at time of writing in regards to the feature film in development.

This is not Street Fighter’s first attempt at appearing in mainstream media however as in the past we have had a few live-action adaptations.

Most notably, Universal’s 1994 Street Fighter that starred Jean-Claude Van Damme and a decade later 20th Century Fox’s own adaptation with Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li in 2009.

Both these movies unfortunately did not receive box office success.

However, with the recent surge of good video game adaptations following HBOs The Last of Us and Paramount’s Sonic The Hedgehog movie, perhaps this is a good sign that good video adaptations are a thing and Legendary Entertainment could take cues from these successful adaptations and utilize the licensing rights to produce a Street Fighter film or TV series that fans and newcomers can both enjoy.

Legendary Entertainment themselves are no strangers to video game adaptations as they were involved in Detective Pikachu and the Warcraft movie.

In any case, its great to see more intellectual properties being adapted into different mediums and hopefully they take creative risks with them but also treat the license with respect.

Street Fighter is a long beloved fighting game that is coming out with its latest title, Street Fighter 6 releasing later this June.
