Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion Has Gotten Gackt To Trend on Twitter

Square Enix dropped the news this morning that a remaster of Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII would be coming out and the internet seems to have one thing on its mind about it: Gackt.

This has come to a point where Gackt is currently a trending topic on Twitter with Final Fantasy fans delighted to see his return despite his character having a mixed reception in the past.

For those that don’t know Gakuto Oshiro, more well known under his stage name Gackt is a popular Japanese musician and singer who has performed music for a number of anime and video games.

In Crisis Core, the main villain of the game Genesis Rhapsodos is voiced by and modeled after Gackt. Many fans believe that this might be part of the reason it took so long for the game to get ported to other systems as Square would need to get the licensing rights from Gackt to use his likeness for Genesis.

Genesis as a character has seen a mixed reception from fans. He’s portrayed as arrogant, selfish, petty, and obsessed with this poem he’s constantly reading which he constantly projects as being about his own life. Many fans also feel the character is a bit of a creator’s pet, being written as best friends with Sephiroth and an important reason why he eventually fell to evil.

Yet with the news of his return, many fans are happy to see Gackt back once again voicing Genesis. Some fans even acknowledge that people hated the character but are still thankful to see his return.

Turns out “Gackt” is one of my Winter Soldier trigger words and now I’m locked in an horrifically embarrassing flashback to being 17 years old when Crisis Core first came out.

I suppose it shows how people’s perceptions of a character change over time. Even if people didn’t like Genesis he’s still an integral part of Crisis Core which people have fond memories off. It just wouldn’t be the same without him.

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion will be available for PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam this winter.
