Marvel’s Moon Knight has become increasingly popular across the web, and netizens have been quick to cross him over with a certain other hero powered by the moon, Usagi Tsukino aka Sailor Moon.

Beyond the moon theme, many people have noted however that Moon Knight has quite a bit in common with the magical girl genre. He’s given special powers by an animal mascot which allows him to transform into a magical new outfit, all to stop an evil god-like force.

There’s been a trend on social media showing the two heroes together or wearing a version of each other’s costumes. Needless to say, it’s pretty cute and pretty funny.

The appeal here comes from the fact that they have something in common, powers that come from the moon, but also notable differences. The most notable being that one is a 14-year-old middle school girl and the other is a hardened mercenary with a dissociative identity disorder.

The unintentional similarities however run deeper. Sailor Moon’s love interest is a dapper young vigilante named Tuxedo Mask. For a time in the manga and anime, Tuxedo Mask went under a new persona consisting of a white Arab-inspired garb and called himself ‘Moonlight Knight’. The comparisons practically write themselves.

Going deeper down the rabbit hole, it has also been found that there is an old Japanese tokusatsu hero named Moonlight Mask who also bears visual similarities to Moon Knight. Debuting in 1958, Moonlight Mask predates both the marvel hero and Sailor Moon.

It’s good to know that regardless of what time or culture we’re from, they’ll always be some weirdo dressed in white punishing thugs in the name of the moon.

Moon Knight is currently airing on Disney Plus.
