xxxHolic will be having its live action movie adaptation released 29 April 2022, as part of its roadshow event. The official website for the work can be found here, with cast comments from Kimihiro Watanuki’s (Kamiki Ryunosuke) and Yuuko Ichihara’s (Kou Shibasaki) actors, as well as staff comments from director Mika Ninagawa and CLAMP.

To note, this isn’t the first xxxHolic live action adaptation, but the previous one was a stage play rather than a movie. The movie’s script is not by CLAMP’s Ohkawa, however, and there’s no immediate indication that she oversaw it. At the very least, do expect it to take a different direction from the stage play to fit the different medium.

For the uninitiated, xxxHolic revolves around Watanuki (often only ever referred by his last name) who’s basically plagued by spirits who aren’t all benign. He finds himself at Yuuko’s doorstep, actually a shop that claims to be able to grant any wish as long as the requester can pay the equivalent price. The initial stories tend to appear standalone in nature, with references sprinkled around, which doesn’t make them any less vague and hard to understand at first.

International audiences could hope for a screening considering its cult favourite status, so keep an eye out.
