Aniplex and TYPE-MOON have confirmed that the anime film adaptation of Witch on the Holy Night will be released in theaters in 2026. The movie is being produced by ufotable.
The project was first announced back in 2021, and after years of anticipation, fans now have a confirmed release window to look forward to. Further details about the film are expected to be shared this spring. Witch on the Holy Night, also known by its Japanese title Mahoutsukai no Yoru, is a visual novel originally released for PC in April 2012. It was developed by TYPE-MOON, the studio behind popular franchises such as Fate and Tsukihime.
The story is set in the late 1980s and follows three main characters: Aoko Aozaki, a high school girl who unexpectedly inherits her family’s magical legacy; Alice Kuonji, a reclusive young witch and magus who lives in a mansion on a hill; and Soujuurou Shizuki, an ordinary boy who stumbles upon the two witches and becomes tangled in their world. The visual novel serves as a prequel to Tsukihime, another TYPE-MOON title, and is set roughly a decade before those events.
Unlike most TYPE-MOON visual novels, Witch on the Holy Night tells a single, linear story with no branching paths or player choices making it more like an interactive novel than a traditional game. It was also the company’s first all-ages release.

The visual novel’s roots go back even further than its 2012 release. TYPE-MOON co-founder Kinoko Nasu originally wrote the story in 1996 as a 400-page novel, though it was never publicly released at the time. It was eventually revived and adapted into the visual novel that fans know today.
